A true diva, folks just couldn't deal with her because of her. How in the hell did she get and stay so popular?
Either you hate her or you love her.
And 'diva' has unfortunately been corrupted to mean something bad. Really a diva was the best singer in an opera, usually the female high soprano.
Anyway, she just had "it." She could turn on the charm. Blindingly so. Most women weren't fooled but men were. I think Mickey Stevenson is the only one who escaped her clutches. But that may have been a combination of gordy handling everything to do with The Supremes, Mickey being a very wise man, and his wife, Kim Weston putting the fear of god into diane. Most, if not all of those Motown women came through the Detroit public school system and were not to be fucked with. diane herself was from the PJs. But as one of her childhood friends said, "people think diane became a snob when she got famous but that's not true. She was always a snob."
