Why put off the inevitable...now or later. Any further delay could 'hurt' the teams chances at making a serious run for all of the marbles. Why go on the DL while the team's making a run, thus eliminating a solid bat in the line-up.
It's projected that he'll miss 7-9 weeks, so A-Rod's return to the line-up is expected right after the *ALL-Star break. That's when he'll be needed most. After missing approximately one-half of the season, he'll probably hit between 25-30 HR's, while knocking in 75-85 RBI's. Those are good numbers for the ordinary. A-Rod's extra-ordinary.
The Yankees might make a trade to replace his bat, after evaluating both Mark Teahen (3B) and Cody Ransom (3B). Both players have seen spare action (i.e., late-inning replacements, base runers, pinch-hitting,etc). If either one stays, Ransom will probably get the nod. His numbers project more favorably than Teahen's. But with the Yankees you never know. They may 'open' the pocketbook, and sign a high-priced veteran. And it will be 'high-priced', because your opponents recognize desperation!!
* allowing time for a 'late Spring training'..a so-called 'getting in baseball shape' period.
