Sleep Apnea

I have sleep apnea, too. I pretty much diagnosed myself after doing some researching online. I don't have health insurance, so I searched for some options to get a sleep study... no luck.

I did find http://www.sleepapnea.org/ the site for the American Sleep Apnea Association. I called them on the humbug just to see what info they could give me and the Assistant Director answered the phone, Tracy Nasca. We talked, she shared her story and told me that I was too young to be dealing with it & it needed to be treated. She gave me some places to call for a sleep study, but the cheapest was about $1,200. I couldn't swing it.

She did also tell me about a program where they can get me an AutoPAP machine at a drastic discount. I had to have a prescription for one, then they (ASAA) would send it to the doctor that prescribed it. I went to a local doctor close by and explained my symptoms, he told me they are classic signs of sleep apnea, then I explained the program and what I was trying to do, he agreed & helped, but I still had to pay for the visit.

I have this one... the ResMed S9 with humidifier

I noticed that I sleep better with it, even when only using it 3 times a week, but it's not calibrated. ASAA sent it to me with broad pressure parameters 4-20 I think, so it would be all over the place. I had made a habit when I wake up to look at the pressure before I removed the mask or stopped the machine. Sometimes it would be 14 or 15 and my stomach would be full of air and my chest would hurt like pressure was on my heart. I be burping & farting all damn day, which I don't mind 'cuz I like pootin, I just don't like the feeling of being full of empty air.

I haven't used it in about 6-8 weeks. Kinda displaced

How can I get a sleep study if I don't have health insurance? Or at least get the machine calibrated. The least expensive place I called wanted $500 just to look at the info on the SD card
Shit apply for Medicaid and see if you qualify.Other than that I don't know any other way around it without any insurance.
Do you only use it 3 times a night because it's not calibrated or is that how you plan to use it when it's calibrated?

They medical supply place should program the pressure when they get the prescription. The sleep study already diagnosed the pressure needed when they sleep study was done.
Okay I got it.Hopefully I can get it by this week.Been having heart pains the last few days and sleep apnea can cause that.

I haven't used it in over a month, and before that was rarely more than 5 times a week. Mainly due to me fucking w/ triflin ass hoes more than I should and stayin between two or so of them and my own crib

This is the one I have....I do not leave home without it!!!

I was cured in about 3 months.

At one point I was 5'11 around 280 to 285. I was eating very poorly. Typical meal for me was

Breakfast - two sausage biscuit from Bojangles or two bacon an cheese biscuits. With a small sprite. Sometime I would switch it up an eat two bacon and cheese cruisants from Burger king.

Snack - would pull out a sour apple blow pop.

Lunch- wings and fries, fired chicken sandwich, pizza, soda, or juice (lemonade mixed with fruit punch)

Dinner - pasta, steak, Chinese rice and chicken, hamburger, at least two a few glasses of soda. Fried pork chops

Once I started to lose weight not only did my sleep apnea disappear but my high blood pressure and diabetes.

My sleep apnea went away around 240 lbs. Once I got to that weight I was back to slightly snoring.

High blood pressure dropped about every 10 lbs I lost. So I got lower blood pressure almost immediately.

Diabetes- soon as I started exercising that went a way. I went from having to stick myself several times a day, maybe around 6 to about 3. What I noticed is that my sugar lever dropped to about 90 after work outs. As the weight came off my body began regulating my sugar on its on. So I was only diabetic because I was fat.

Now I am about 205 and pretty cut which I was not before.

What I eat now

Breakfast - egg whites and wheat toast. Or oatmeal. Either water or Orange juice depending on how I feel.

Snack - always fruit now. Grapes, strawberries, mangos or some nuts

Lunch- salads, one turkey sandwich or ham n cheese. Instead of chips I eat fruit and a water. If I do go out I get the standard 10 wings in fries but I only eat 4 wings and a few fries. If I eat bad I only do half portions.

Dinner - baked chicken, steak, salad, wild rice, stay away from fried mostly
I really need to do this for real

My girl told me for years I stop breathing and when I was in the service i was told. I finally went to the VA for a sleep study they hook me up to a monitor and i went to sleep they woke me up an hour later gave me a mask (CPAP) and i went back to sleep it was the BEST SLEEP EVER!!!! I use to be a RED BULL & Rockstar drinker 2 or 3 a day. Now i maybe drink one a day if i work super hard at work. But they told me i stop sleeping 93x's an hour. That scared the Sh*t out of me. SO since I had it I only missed 2 day I a could feel the differences.

same here man...damn:confused: VA mofos called me in this week and gave me the resmed 10.......this fucking year:smh: Thankfully it's fucking free from them riding my ass all those years of service. Motherfuckers

I use to fall asleep at meetings and while working in general. My boss never fired me at the time but I knew he saw me. Bitch ass coworkers were talking behind my back, calling me lazy. When I fell asleep standing up I went to the doc. Turns out I have a bad case. But since using the nasal pillow I'm good to go. I use to have night terrors too. Waking up screaming and shit cuz it felt like I was dying. I get them once in awhile.

if you mil vet its easier to claim and get compensation. Narcolepsy/apnea

Gotta get that weight off. If you're a big cat, I don't care what you look like or what you think you look like, if you're a cat with a 19inch or above neck chances are you have that shit. The CPAP machines are cool for the RIGHT NOW, but you've got to start taking better care of yourself and dropping those pounds.

22 inch neck but only 25 inch reach. Basically I'm a crock :smh:

Gotta clean house my brother! Clean up that diet and get moving. I had a homeboy that passed like a decade ago, 22-23, he feel asleep at the wheel in broad daylight going up the sprain brook parkway and there was no drugs or alcohol in his system, we can only assume sleep apnea played a part because if dude ever got in your whip he could be talking to you one minute and the next he's in your passenger seat snoring, shit happens THAT fast when you have it :smh:

This thread is right on time. This past year was hard on me physically. I just had a consultation at the sleep study place. Damn near everything that asked I could check off. Since about June I've been sleeping horribly. I work shift work so I thought that was it. I will be having my sleep study soon. I can't wait to get my machine. Hopefully the energy boost will help me back in the gym. I miss the days of being around 205 and being in the gym. Luckily for me my BP is low and my glucose levels are good. Just the headaches, tiredness ,cranky, and just being tired.

I have it...for me, it was not a case of being overweight. I had some deformities in my throat when I was born, and my turbinates in my nose were constantly swollen, making breathing through my nose difficult, if not impossible. I would snore all the time, and I would fall asleep at a moment's notice. I was officially diagnosed, and I had a CPAP machine, but I hated using it. I finally decided to have the throat surgery (called a uvulopyloplasty), and a turbinectomy. I do NOT recommend having the surgery unless you're prepared to be in pain, because it hurt to swallow (felt like a surge of electricity EVERY time I swallowed). It hurt for several weeks, and I lost 15 pounds. (It didn't help that I had a surgeon - he was Black! - who was a total asshole that did not believe that I was in that much pain. This was very disappointing. If you have the surgery, vetting your surgeon is essential. Before anyone says anything, there a lot of qualified Black surgeons out there that can help you if you choose to go that route.) After the surgery, you may infrequently experience food or liquid going into your nose if you sneeze or cough when eating, and your voice may change, or fade out at times. I will say this - after the surgery, it was determined that I no longer needed a CPAP machine. I do have to wear a mouthpiece at night that opens up my airway by pushing my jaw slightly forward - it's easily much more manageable, but it is only for less severe cases.

Bottom line - if you are constantly tired, or if you loved one says that you snore or stop breathing when you are sleeping, please talk to your doctor and have an evaluation. It can save your life.

This shit is no joke, and I might eventually have to get the surgery. The machine helped at first but not a lot. I'm still sleepy all the time

I still have to shut the wait though. I just spent the past couple hours running heists on Grand Theft Auto V and I ran 3.23 miles during that process in spurts. I'm 245 now, but I was 265 and April of last year

As a singer, I'm scared to have the surgery.

I might need the surgery, but having the surgery might mess up my voice. I've lost a little bit since high school but I've won $3,000 the past 3 years. Has any singers had the surgery?

I don't sing professionally, but I do like to sing. Keep in mind that your uvula (the piece of skin that hangs down in the back of your throat) is cut out. You may not be able to make the rolling sound with your tongue (like what Michael Jackson did at the end of "Remember The Time". Your vocal pitch may change slightly, and the volume in your voice may decrease at the end of the day if you have to talk a lot during the day. This should not stop you from having the surgery if you really need it. I had speech therapy for a few weeks to strengthen my voice, where I did exercises similar to the exercises you do when you are warming up to sing, and my vocal pitch, volume, and quality did improve significantly. I didn't do the exercises at home like I should, and my voice sometimes is affect like I said above. I just have to go back to doing the exercises (which I should do anyway, since I like to sing.) If the exercises are done consistently, your voice should not be affected.

surgery didn't work for me

Bumped for the ongoing discussion. Got a few friends who have it, and they did the sleep testing/examination years back, etc.

same here

What makes it worst,I was born with a heart condition and I saw the result of this night test I took last month. The doctor told me today my heart be acting crazy whenever I have a hard time breathing,so now I have to take a sleeping test really to see, what him(lung specialist),my primary doctor and cardiologist is going to do,after they get the results of that test.

I got CPAP but it ain't done shit for me.Still ain't getting refreshing sleep.Got another follow up next month to see what else could be wrong.

So are some sleep apnea problems caused by health and weight, and some it doesn't matter how much you weigh or your health?

A natural cure i'd highly recommend for those iffy about surgery and machines is cannabis.

High doses of the proper marijuana strain right before bed has the ability to keep open nasal passages and relax muscle tissue during REM sleep. This leads to a greater and fuller sleep.

(High doseage is relevant btw. If you're a novice, a couple of tokes from a joint could easily do the trick)

I had sleep apnea at one point and the introduction of cannabis changed my life around completely. I wake up refreshed every morning now and can cruise straight tho the day with more energy than before.

All natural and no need for an obstructing mask for 8-10 hours.

It's worth a try.

Yes,but you can also get it for other various reasons too.

I got mines from the bronchitis I had in September, every since then I haven't slept well at all....Luckily,the lung specialist that I'm seeing caught it,because I was born with a heart condition and it could really fuck me up.

Just use it every night, man. You will not believe how much better you will sleep. If I don't use mine, I feel like crap the next day.

Ive been trying but I can't keep this mask on. I have Resmed 10 Airsense too. It's good for a min then I have to rip that ship off my face.

try different masks - they usually set you up with a cheap one... look for masks that use comfort gel
also try different styles like full face, nose & mouth instead of just nose

The main types of sleep apnea are:
  • Obstructive sleep apnea, the more common form that occurs when throat muscles relax.
  • Central sleep apnea, which occurs when your brain doesn't send proper signals to the muscles that control breathing.

I have the Resmed Quattro Mirage full face. It's comfortable and has the gel like above but after about 3 hours I feel like I'm being suffocated in it and pull it off

Yeah I just found out I have severe sleep apnea also. Trying to adjust to the CPAP with the nose mask now, not easy.
