I don't know, it's really an impossible situation.
I mean, would it be better if a woman was the president, and the husband had to put his career on hold for his wife? Feminist's would say that would be appropriate, because the progress for women would be more important than his individual career - and it wouldn't be permanent.
Well, couldn't the same be said about Barack Obama being elected? Progress has been made because of Barack, and that also benefit's Michelle, and her children, because they're Black.

i think what the reporter is forgetting to note is that michelle wasn't elected president. barack was. so her role is necessarily subordinate in the same way it would be if hillary clinton had been elected and bill was the first husband.

acknowledged. my point remains. the reporter simply is ignoring the fact that michelle wasn't elected to anything. she's married to the president who was elected to the job. if i run say... citigroup... my wife, while perhaps active in the citigroup community and weilding some power in the finance world, is still just my wife - despite the credentials she's acquired in her life. and if she's a doctor... when i visit her at the hospital - i'm simply her husband - and in her place of power my position is subordinate.

Basically she's pointing out that Michelle was the breadwinner before Barrack became president, and she's complaining that everyone is commenting on how Michelle looks in a dress than what she accomplished before being the first lady. In other words she's complaining about the woman having to share the spotlight instead of have it completely on her since she accomplished more.
I hate to say it, but this is a problem with a lot of women today. Any submission to a man for the spotlight, no matter what is unacceptable. It's not like America has told Michelle to go to the kitchen and make some cookies as men are working. The first lady is similar to the VP, they do things but you don't hear it as it's not always headline newsworthy. People are aware of what she achieved and she'll easily get it back if not more once its all over. The author just needs to chill out.
