I guess the argument is really about defining an ELITE player. That probably means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. I think if you are consistently in the top 5 of your position over your career, you have to be considered. Then, you seal the deal if you have the intangables like clutch performances in big games-playoffs, etc. I think PP has always been an elite player and has one of the big mid-range games in NBA history. He is not one of the greatest of all time at the small-forward position (top five which would be my elite of all time) but I just dont see how you cant call him elite during his era.

But the OP said he definition of elite is TOP 3 of the entire league. I think that is a very narrow definition of a elite player.

Because his personal perfomance was outstanding and he brought his team with him. Before 08 would you really take Pierce over Iverson? No...

Example of VERY GOOD but not elite.. TRACY MCGRADY was NOT elite.. IN Orlando he averaged a ton of points and was considered top 3 for a few years BUT he did not take his team with him, therefore T-MAC was not ELITE.
