America is based on an adversarial system of business and law. Better advocates, and privileged advocates, expect more money and better health care than the less fortunate. The idea of universal health care threatens that order.
As long as America remains a capitalistic and adversarial nation Democrats should not focus on universal healthcare. It's a losing battle. Instead, Democrats should focus on the redistribution of wealth--i.e., narrowing the gap between rich and poor. Universal healthcare won't happen until the gap between rich and poor is better equalized.
