'Shogun' stars recognized with Golden Globe award nominations

The U.S. television drama "Shogun" and its star cast members have been nominated for top awards at the Golden Globes, the event organizer said Monday, in further recognition of the success of the series set in feudal Japan.

Hiroyuki Sanada, 64, was among the nominees for the best performance by a male actor in a TV drama series, while Anna Sawai, 32, was among those up for the award in the corresponding female category.

Shogun is also in the running for the best TV drama series. It collected a total of 18 Emmy awards earlier this year.

Set on the eve of the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600, Sanada, who also produced the program, plays a fictitious military commander modeled after shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu. Sawai acts as an interpreter to a British navigator in Sanada's samurai clan.

Tadanobu Asano, 51, who plays a samurai in the drama, was nominated for the supporting male TV actor award.

The Golden Globe Awards ceremony will take place on Jan. 5 in California's Beverly Hills.

After seeing Clipped we were reminded how much better the casting was on Winning Time for HBO / Max.

I certainly agree, Winning Time's casting was amazing. The only issue I had was making Dr. J look like Gregory Hines.

But given that Clipped dealt with more serious subjects such as race, ethnicity, sex, and class, I wish they had cast it better so the discussions surrounding the show would focus on that instead of the comical casting.

Ed O'Neill was great as Donald Sterling, and Cleopatra Coleman was prettier than V. Stiviano, but I thought Coleman played the role well in terms of making me feel sympathy for V. Stiviano while still finding V. Stiviano to fairly unlikable.

The rest of the cast looked like an SNL skit

Winning Time did better casting characters as they looked 45 years ago, Clipped fail on casting characters from 10 years ago.

Indeed - the serious discussions in Clipped would have worked better with far better casting accuracy. Some of the casting selections didn't even appear to be close / ball park to the person in question.

Cleopatra Coleman was quite good. She really played up the eccentric & naive / conniving angles of V. really well - and those DSLs - My God. The best blowjobs would be had. Seriously.

Enjoyed Ed O'Neill's role as he got to play a true piece of shit.

With the Winning Time cast ... kudos entirely to the cast & casting director(s). WOW. The people they chose were excellent. Hell ... you won't get much better than the guys playing Magic, Kareem, and Bird. Those dudes were extremely believable. Props to some of the coaching staff too.

Hiroyuki Sanada Says ‘Shogun’ Season 2 Is ‘Aiming’ to Shoot This Fall: ‘The Writers’ Room Is Working So Hard’

“We are aiming for the fall of this year, and the writers’ room is working so hard now,” Sanada told Variety Saturday at AARP’s Movies for Grownups Awards in Los Angeles. “We’re going to have half [of the Season 1] cast remaining, and then half new cast coming. We are finding the best crew for next season now, so I’m excited.”
