Sheryl Underwood Slams Natural Hair

People don't take kindly to the comedian's disparaging remarks about "nappy" hair on her CBS show, The Talk.

(The Root) -- Twitter was not happy with Sheryl Underwood on Sunday.

On an "encore presentation" of her CBS show The Talk that aired Aug. 30, Underwood railed against "nappy" "Afro" hair during a discussion about Heidi Klum saving her children's hair after it had been cut. Klum's children with ex-husband Seal have "huge Afros," as she described them.

Upon hearing that Klum saves their hair, Underwood responded, "Why would you save Afro hair?" She went on to imply that nobody wants that type of hair, saying that you never hear of a woman in a hair shop asking for that "curly, nappy, beady" hair.

Co-host Sarah Gilbert chimed in, saying that she, too, sometimes saves her children's hair, and Underwood interjected, saying that it was "probably some beautiful, long, silky stuff," implying that that type of hair is desirable and worth saving. The only thing more hurtful than hearing those words was co-host Aisha Tyler's silence and listening to the enthusiastic laughter of the audience, who, apparently, agreed.

The idea that blackness is bad by virtue of its not being white, that black people are biologically undesirable and unattractive, is nothing new. Underwood's comments come from the same sentiment that has had black folks bleaching their skin and white folks lightening us for their magazines and advertisements. That Underwood bashed natural hair from beneath a very heavy-looking wig full of the "beautiful, long, silky stuff" she covets so much is telling.

Many on Twitter are asking Underwood who taught her to hate herself, while she insists that those upset are "tripping." She attempted to defend her comments by saying that she found it odd that any parent would save a child's hair, completely skirting the issue. Underwood never entertained the notion that what she said could have had much larger implications and never came close to apologizing.

There's no shame in ignorance. Sometimes you just don't know things, and that's fine. It becomes a problem when that ignorance is willful, when you have the opportunity to educate yourself and you choose to save face instead. Here are some folks who were less than impressed with Underwood's comments and her handling of the situation.

I saw twitter posts about this, but I was too busy to follow the topic.

**pause** she said what???

I saved a lock of all of my boys "nappy" hair from their first hair cuts! She spoke out of pure ignorance on this topic....smh

peace

she's a lame republican fat coon.

Fuck her

big toofused, weave rockin, Gum smiling :raccoon:
Whenever she gets going, its time to tune out

She turned a simple scene into a jigabooing, coontastic voyage that wasn't necessary even though there were just two Black women in the room

Thank goodness they cut it off right b4 that.

AliciaTyler's like "MyNameBennett......"

She always tries to go above and beyond and it's not even funny. Putting on like you said a jiggaboo performance each time she speaks.

I know it apparently pays the bills & shit as its hard work trying to keep them gums on the air but I can't fuck with that hammy, stereotypical caricature coon shit for real.

She doesn't have to be super militant to stand out or even a 'trouble maker' :hmm::rolleyes:as the Itl chick with ass & HRP allegedly were b4 they got cut off the show but the total opposite, saying some clown shit just because.

Now if that was HowardStern or BarbaraWaWa saying that dumb shit, there would be a minor, justifiable uproar.

Bitch, shut yo gums the fuck up
Do u even have any seeds? So y talk?

Another e straight cooning for paper, bowtie style

She is an amazingly annoying woman! From her beat ass face, fucked up voice to those Hawse ass gums!!! There is more than nothing about this woman that is even remotely attractive....

Hate her the Steve Harvey show, and hate her even more now... Ugly Bitch!!! :smh:

she loves her new life, and good for her, I have no reason to ever watch her show or give a fuck about her opinion...

I am glad she found her little place in life, and taught me,

never trust them self hating muthafuckas,

they will turn on you the first chance they get...

I wish her well and I thank her for the confirmation...

i wanna beat this bitch head with a lead pipe everytime i see her.

Too close.
You might get some spittle, gum juice & a big assed chip flying @ u.
Back up & just chuck that shit end over end so she could be extra shocked when it meets that grill;)
Then tell her about herself while she figures it out;
I'll be in the backseat :roflmao2:

tried to save face saying she didn't get the concept but she could understand when it was "that smooth silky stuff"

If she had left it at, or started at, "I don't get people saving hair" I would be right with her. But she turned right to the other White woman with White kids and thought that was worth saving.
I give comedians a lot of leeway but with her not even acknowledging that she fucked up, I can't give Sheryl the benefit of the doubt.

I'm curious to know what people are really mad at? It is easy to jump on the bandwagon of hate. I do not hate what she said, it made me feel real sad BUT what are people mad at? It is not like Black folks and other races didn't know that this happens. It is not like we haven't seen this discussed in documentaries (small or theater status), it is not like thousands, maybe millions of women do not buy tracks of weave at $35-$100+ a pop.

So I ask, what are people really mad about? Why attack her, when she is a generational result or a focal lens for our community?

my 2cents:cool:

I don't think she's either. She said something very ignorant and then, when called on it, didn't have the good sense to recognize her own ignorance and issue a sincere apology (which she did this morning on Steve Harvey's radio show).

Appreciate the response. Knowing that this may come off to be a bit cynical, how sincere do you think celebrity apologies are? Lately, I tend not to buy into them.

Anywho, I do think this is a good topic.

I don't look at celebrity apologies any different than anyone else's. There are/will be in everyone's lives that do them dead dirty and apologize. It's all in the apology and the actions afterward.
Underwood didn't say the words that tell me the apology is insincere "If I offended anyone...". She put it on her.

The majority of black women in the US, the Islands and Africa all have or want to have processed hair or other folks hair associated with themselves and their children.

On the real, black folks that like black hair are an oddity. We the ones that are ignoring the ugliness of black hair and beauty of non-black hair. Thus we are showing our ignorance. Craziness. I know.

My 3 daughter have their natural hair. 2 daughters have beyond shoulder length hair.

During a recent family reunion, several relatives (mostly females) boldly declared that they needed to do something with their hair like it was fertile farmland in need of Monsanto Genetically modified, Irradiated Seed and Pesticides.

Cheryl just said what most black women and a gang of black men think and say among themselves about black folks hair.

CAC loving Aisha Tyler on one side of the table and no class self hating Kneegro Sheryl Underwood on the other. :smh: And to think they bounced a model of intelligent black womanhood, Holly Robinson Peete, for these two. :hmm:

Hair relaxer sales decline 26% over the past five years, reports Mintel

CHICAGO, Sept. 4, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- While hairstyle trends change throughout the decades, the one constant is hair styling and product launches being big business. But new research from Mintel reveals that natural may be the new normal in Black haircare, as relaxers account for just 21% of Black haircare sales and the sector has declined 26% since 2008 and 15% since 2011 when sales reached $179 million—the only category not to see growth.

Mintel's research estimates the relaxer segment will reach $152 million this year, down from $206 million in 2008. Furthermore, in the past 12 months, nearly three-fourths (70%) of Black women say they currently wear or have worn their hair natural (no relaxer or perm), more than half (53%) have worn braids, and four out of 10 (41%) have worn locks.

"The natural hair trend is driving an increase in sales of styling products such as styling moisturizers, setting lotions, curl creams, pomades, etc., but the increase has caused the relaxer segment to decline in sales," says Tonya Roberts, multicultural analyst at Mintel. "A look at expenditures from 2008-2013 shows steady growth in the Black haircare category for all categories except relaxers/perms."

Shampoo and conditioner formulated for Black hair is estimated to reach $257 million in 2013, up from $211 million in 2008. The styling products segment has also increased from $220 million in 2008 to an estimated $268 million in 2013. Meanwhile, the hair color market is forecast to see sales of $36 million in 2013, compared to $32 million in 2008.

However, when it comes to achieving the perfect look, it seems Black women are willing to shell out top dollar to change up their hair. More than half (51%) agree that it's worth spending more on hair care products to achieve the best results while 39% say they like to experiment with new hair care products.

"Given their passion and love of hair, Black consumers represent a lucrative market for companies. Black consumers are always looking for new products to try and seeking information about haircare products," notes Tonya Roberts. "Social networking is one avenue that has helped to garner trust, empowerment, individuality, and pride as it relates to haircare. Brands have been born and re-born using social networks."

So what's the appeal of the natural style? Forty-eight percent of women believe natural or curly hairstyles exude confidence and the same percentage consider them daring. Meanwhile, 45% of Black women think natural coifs are trendy.

Her comment was ignorant but the attacks on her physical appearance are crazy due to the comment are crazy. Criticizing her looks isn't going to educate her about why her comment nay be offensive to some people. Funny how no one gave her the comedian pass that is given to many others who make jokes in poor taste.

Ignorance meet ignorance.

I was going to point this out early on, but I wanted someone else to make the point since I was the OP.

In many ways, the attack on her physical appearance indicate just as much self hate as Underwood's comments display.

There is no eduction for those who want to snuggle up to white people by negatively criticizing the African features of racially mixed children, children period really.

You start a fight, but can't fight, don't get mad you get seriously injured or killed.

You make japes about physical appearance, you get japed about yours.

If Holly Robinson Pete wanted to make jokes about appearance well, it be harder to toss a stone back at her, but in Sheryl's glass house you don't have to go far. Such is life.

Might makes right. All that, " Conscious " start a, " Dialogue " just ain't human nature.

In my salon the only people who get perms on any continuous basis are old folks. And even they're beginning to back away.

But it's much easier to shit on bw than to read truth i guess. Typical.

That maybe your salon, but the Koreans airn't getting any poorer. I would say over the last few years, due to the economy that has happened. I hope sisters start to wear their hair in more natural styles and I hope brothers affirm them for doing it.

That's not what the article says.
It's a good article.

She got on the radio and apologized. Quiver in her voice.

She was wrong but you know what? I don't care. For once, I don't care. Cause I'm tired.

And despite her national platform, I don't know why or if anyone would actually take her seriously. If YOU know the kinky and the curls and the coils is right, fuck what someone else think.
