Shazam! director David F. Sandberg has asked fans to wait and see a trailer before they judge the film.

The DC Films universe may have gotten off to something of a rocky start, but one thing has to be admitted: Warner Bros. is willing to take a risk. Perhaps the most unusual superhero project on their slate is Shazam!, a film that stars Asher Angel and Zachary Levi as young Billy Batson and his alter-ego, Shazam. It’s the story of a teenager who can invoke a magic word and transform into a superhuman powerhouse.

Although the character has his fans, director Sandberg has found himself fielding a lot of criticism. He’s taken to Twitterto warn fans against assuming what the film will be like with such little information to go on so early in the process.

Sandberg’s tweet was in response to a claim that the movie would be inspired by DC’s “New 52” version of the character. A critical fan had gone so far as to suggest people “steer clear of this movie till the DCEU gets a reboot.” It’s true that recent casting announcements have suggested Sandberg will draw on the “New 52” for some plot threads and character dynamics. Ian Chen and Jovan Armand have joined the movie as Billy’s friends Eugene and Pedro, while it’s believed Faith Herman has been cast as another of his friends, Darla. All three characters were introduced in the “New 52,” so the fan’s assumption is vaguely understandable.

It’s also an unwise assumption to make. Shazam (better known to fans as Captain Marvel) was created back in 1939. Most superhero films draw inspiration from a character’s entire run, and it’s likely Shazam! will be no different. Sandberg may have used some characters from the “New 52” era, but that doesn’t mean he hasn’t also drawn ideas from other runs, too.

The reality is that not much is known about Shazam! right now. The movie hasn’t even started filming yet, although Levi has just headed out to Toronto to begin work on it. No plot details have leaked, no casting calls have been released, and previous DC films haven’t contained any teasers or setup for the film. It’s far too soon to judge this movie, let alone to believe fans know what comics have inspired it.

In a further tweet, Sandberg suggested we should really wait before we judge this movie. “Sometimes,” he noted, “I’ll even wait for a trailer of some sort if I really want to go crazy.” The DC Films universe has had a troubled past so far, but nobody in Warner Bros. actually wants to make what Sandberg calls the “Worst Ever!” Shazam! has been given the green light because the studio genuinely believe this superhero, whose comics were once more popular than Superman’s, can shine on the big screen. It’s far too early to say whether or not they’re right, and fans would be wise to reserve judgement.

Shazam Movie Secretly Adds 5 New Superhero Actors To The DCEU

WARNING: This article contains potential SPOILERS for Shazam

The Shazam movie may have just added 5 – yes, FIVE – new DC superheroes to the DCEU. The arrival of the Shazam Family of heroes is being kept under wraps for understandable reasons, since their arrival will be a major moment. That’s assuming the movie plays out like the New 52 version – when Billy Batson’s foster family shares in his magic, becoming adult superheroes alongside him.

The best part? DC may have already cast the actors set to play the Shazam Family without anyone noticing. Under the assumption that adult actors set to play each of Billy’s foster siblings would have to be noticed all converging on the Toronto Shazam set at once, we did some digging, and believe we’ve uncovered the full cast list.

[UPDATE: More Info On Who Might Be Playing the Shazam Family]

What their role in the DCEU may be beyond Shazam is anyone’s guess, but if Freddy Freeman, Mary Marvel, and the rest of the Shazam Family are sticking around, here are the actors and actresses fans can prepare to see join DC’s movie universe.

  • Adam Brody is Freddy Freeman
  • Michelle Borth is Mary
  • Ross Butler is Eugene
  • D. J. Cotrona is Pedro
  • Meagan Good is Darla

Those are the names that popped onto our radar, first thanks to Toronto celeb-spotter MrWillWong.com who caught Brody and Butler arriving in town. From there, some lengthy digging into the Instagram accounts of the actors saw this same group of names being followed and re-followed en masse (alongside star Zachary Levi and the film’s official account).

The cast is an assembly of strong actors across the board, with Brody perhaps the most surprising since he almost joined a DC movie once with Justice League: Mortal. As the jokester of the group in the comics, Freddy Freeman (Captain Marvel, Jr. in the comics) is a perfect fit. The same goes for Ross Butler of Riverdale and 13 Reasons Whyfame.

D. J. Cotrona makes another Justice League: Mortal alum to join the cast, presumably as the adult form of Pedro, a Latino foster sibling of Billy Batson’s. The biggest surprises will be Michelle Borth as the adult Mary, known to TV audiences from Hawaii Five-O most recently. True to their younger selves, adult Mary will have the same strength as Shazam – along with a few extra years on both Billy and star Zachary Levi.

Meagan Good (Minority Report) seems the final piece of the puzzle, and if accurate, is a departure from the New 52 version of the Shazam family. There Darla only aged to her early teens, but maybe it takes a grown woman to get across the love Darla actually has to give.

Hopefully, Warner Bros. or the cast themselves will offer up denials, explanations, or official confirmation soon enough. For the time being, what do you think of this secret casting – and when do you think the studio will officially confirm the ‘adult Shazam family’ is coming to the DCEU?

After JL failed that hard, they really should reconsider coming back with this...

Unless they are going to leave the dark shit behind and male this playful as fuck.

I think Martian Manhunter, Lanterns need some shine... but Shazam?

Its almost halfway done...

they are investing heavy...

I cannot BELIEVE they did NOT take up the Rock on his offer to produce this years ago.

Shazam! Director Trolls Fans Over Batman Forever Suit Comparisons

After fans started drawing comparisons between the popularly derided suit from Batman Forever and the suit from the upcoming DC superhero adaptation Shazam!, the movie's director, David Sandberg (Annabelle: Creation, Light's Out), didn't go down without a fight. In fact, he took to social media to troll a fan who pointed out the negative comparison.

Based on the comic book of the same name from writer Bill Parker and illustrator C.C. Beck, Shazam! centers around a young orphan named Billy Batson (played by Asher Angel) who is granted a number of magical powers that enable him to transform into a hero known as Captain Marvel (in early comics) or Shazam (in later comics). With the ability to transform into the much older superhero (played by Zachary Levi) simply by uttering the word, "Shazam!," Billy relishes in his newfound powers alongside his best friend Freddy Freeman (played by IT's Jack Dylan Grazer) until a greater threat - courtesy of Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (played by Mark Strong) - begins to interfere. And now that the first official images of Levi have surfaced, showcasing the hero's deliberately over-the-top ensemble, director David Sandberg took to social media to defend the movie's aesthetic choices to critical fans.

After some criticisms surfaced from fans regarding the design of Shazam's suit, Sandberg took to Twitter to troll the critics. One fan commented on a photo retweeted by Levi that revealed a hi-res shot of the actor in costume on the cover of EW. The fan's comment was specifically directed at Sandberg when he said, "jesus Christ. what the hell is this? David we thought ur gonna bring the DCEU back to the track. but this looks like BATMAN FOREVER S***." However, instead of taking the criticism to heart, Sandberg responded with a humorous slant:

The fan also took aim at the string of critical failures within the DCEU - including Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad, and, most recently, Justice League - suggesting that Shazam! lost its chance to stand alongside Wonder Woman as a positive outlier in DC's extended universe. Meanwhile, Sandberg's sarcastic response might also loosely refer to the SNL feature-length movie Coneheads, in which Dan Aykroyd's alien character has two nipples on his behind.

Harsh criticisms from fans are inevitable with any comic book adaptation, but between the backlash against Joss Whedon's cut of Justice League, Man of Steel's handling of Superman, and the DCEU's interpretation of the Joker, DC has still managed to continue standing tall. Along with their misfires, they have successes (namely with Wonder Woman, as well as their perseverance to learn from their mistakes and pursue a new direction with their adaptations), and as long as the filmmakers behind the scenes have thick skin, they've got a shot at proving the DCEU isn't yet down for the count.

Main reason I hate comic book movies. Think about Superman. A blue eyed cracka with super powers who is an alien. Because aliens would look like aryans.

As a "Captain Marvel" fan, I was hoping for something just a little less goofy from the one dude who, in the comics at least, could beat Superman head to head. Not totally serious, but not goofy as those trailers look.
