Shafted on the insurance??? **This is long

Let me give you all the background...

I've been with Alstate Auto insurance since I was 19, now I'm 31. I had two minor accidents back in Chicago more than 6 years ago ( no DUI they were weather related; i.e. sliding on ice, falling ice from the 87th st overpass). When I was I in Chicago I had a V6 turbo charged Grand Am, paint job, wheels etc...etc. Recently about two years ago I moved to Central Fla (tampa bay). Since ia was a new place I sold my old car before left Chicago, and bought a New but economical car. Kia Spectra 5 hatch-back ( I figure since the move was new I had better make sure the money was in order before i started going all out on a new car).
here;s the issue. My insurance in Chicago was about $237/ mo ( kinda of high but I figured that I had a nice ride, and Chicago is not the safest place all the time, plus i did live in what some folks would call the hood ( 63rd).
Now in Fla with a less valuable car, and a better area my insurance is still about $195/ mo.
I'm thinking about going with one of theses no name folks. I think all theses year's I've been getting shafted by my insurance. Granted when I did have the two accidents in Chicago I had my car fixed, and back in about a wk. Any body here have any input on this insurance thing. I'm basically about to say fugg it, and go low ball on the auto insurance thing. I'm thinking I might be able to get some cheap insurance for almost half of what I'm spending. Am I wrong??

I think you should research the market. I have no loyalty to any insurance company. I have had several and they have all been pretty good. I am with Teacher's insurance and I pay under $900 for full coverage on two vehicles (a Caddy and a taurus) If you are a teacher definitely give them a try. Before I found out about this insurance we had Geico. they dropped me because I was hit three times in one year. Call it bad luck, but they had pretty good rates as well. We also had esurance. a tree fell on my wife's galant back in the day and they had an estimator out to the house in two days and a check in a week. I would definitely get a qoute from these guys. you are getting ripped. I did a qoute for allstate this year they want $1600 for six months. I pay half of that for a year.

Low-balling won't help playa, you're just a statistic to them. They plug in all your info and the computer spits out a number. They don't have much wiggle room in how much they charge you. Fucked up thing is you get charged for shit you didn't do like how much vandalism occurs in your area. Move to NY and you would know what I mean.

It also depends on your personal information....i.e. married, over 25, .etc. The one thing you might have going for you is the length you have been with them. Shop around for a lower deal with similar coverage and make them beat the offer or you walk. The good thing about switching insurance is it is an asset until you use it. They have no choice but to refund your money so there is no contract agreement to wait out. Best of luck.

*UPDATED *

I called My Agent today ,and asked him about my pricing, he says that I have standard pricing for some one of my age, and history etc...etc.. and that @ 195/mo I'm paying the average rate for some one my age, and with my car, etc..etc...
I wasn't happy with that so I figured I needed to figure out how theses agent's get paid. So I called another office, and told them I was interested in becoming an Insurance sales man, etc...etc... I found out that Agent's get paid based on new policies, and residuals on existing policies..bonuses, awards etc..etc... Interesting right?
So my next step was to call a third Allstate Agent. I told him I wanted to get a new quote for my Auto insurance policy which is ending at the end of this month. He gave mt a quote of $98 /monthly ( remember i was at $195). After he gave me that quote I told him I really wasn't feeling Allstate because I feel like I've been robbed etc..etc.. and that I was going to go price shopping with Geico or Progressive. He got on the phones made a few calls and then told me that I should be receiving a check in the mail from Allstate for about $976. He says there was some kind of error in my forms causing me to be charged a different rate. He kept asking me to have the check sent to him so he can apply it to my next two 6 month policies ( Auto insurance in Fla is only 6months per term). I told him that I'll bring the check to him and sign up for my new policy with his office once I get the check. I called Allstate when I got home to make sure this check thing was legit, they had record of a check being cut and mailed to me today and I should get it in 5 days...in the mean time I'm going to do some insurance shopping. I'm thinking I can get a little less than $98 /month if I really shop around. Either that or I'll look for a brother that's doing Allstate, and show him my $98 dollar quote and have him hook it up.
