sex education for five year olds

hey everyone and welcome to my first post!

i just wanted to know what your views are on sex education being taught to five year old's in schools?

over here in the UK the current age to be taught about sex education is 11 or 12. but the government want to start it as early as 5 to cut the risks of teenage pregnancies and sexually-transmitted diseases. there are also discussions on teaching them about homosexual relationships to cut out hate and discrimination towards them in the future, they will also be taught that its ok to be gay and have feeling towards the same sex.

if i had a 5 yr old i don't think i would want my child to be taught that being homosexual is alright, and it is natural to have feeling for the same sex. (i don't have anything against gay people they can do their thing and I'll do mine.) but children that age are very influential, i don't want my son or daughter experimenting because their school has taught them its ok to be gay.

whats your view?

ok. I agree that there should be better sex education but I'am not too sure about the starting age of 5.

Westerners treat sex as a taboo and that it should be kept from children.

I never understood why.

It's natural.

Covering it up will create a "big red button effect" where they'll only become more interested.

I always say just explain to them what sex is and that it's not for children and that if it's done by minors that it can be painful, it can create health hazards it even may lead to death. :dunno:

oh and homosexuality is not natural and i wouldn't want my kid thinking that it it is. Or that it's o.k. to have a crush on some one of the same gender at such a young age, but i don't mind telling them that it's wrong to mistreat homosexuals.

You're distorting the concept of "sex education" (like most reactionaries). 5 year-olds aren't being taught about sexual activity. That's ridiculous. They ARE being taught how to recognize a sexual PREDATOR. Big difference. They tried to trash Obama on this same misrepresented point.

(And don't say you have nothing against homosexuals, because you clearly do. You're like white people who say they don't have any problem with blacks, as long as they keep to themselves and don't inter-marry with, or exert any influence on, whites.)

In order to teach a child what a sexual predator is you have to give them a fundamental at knowledge of least the sexual organs.. which is going to give way to their curious little minds to wonder what they do ...

I think children that young should be taught that that is a "no-no" area and if anyone tries to touch it, run screaming! lol ... but more more effectively...

I do agree with sex ed being taught to children in junior high school beginning, in NJ junior high can be either 5th or 6th grade, so that equates to between 10-12

I think sex ed should start right before kids hit puberty. And parents should be more comfortable at least with telling kids how babies are made...

By the age of 5 kids are already knowledgeable of the difference between boys and girls and are naturally curious about the differences in their anatomy . . . Just because a child is taught about how something works, does not mean they will rush right out and experiment and practice.

Waiting until kids are about to hit puberty may be too late. There are too many 10, 11, 12 year olds becoming sexually active, and being infected with STIs, to wait until that point to teach them about sex ed. However, if parents were involved in incorporating age-appropriate sex education throughout the life of their child, there would probably be fewer kids becoming sexually active at such an early age -- or at least uninformed about the responsibilities and consequences involved with having sex. Why are parents up in arms over what a school wishes to teach children about sex, but are not willing to take up the task themselves?

If my children ask, they will learn. If they are old enough to ask, they are old enough to know what's right and what's wrong. I can't have my children growing up like me.

A bit of background to this story.

This followed a report from UNESCO in regards to teaching sex education to children starting at age 5

I do remember this conversation during a debate on television here in the UK. When people first heard this argument, people were quick to jump on the bandwagon on why are you teaching 5 year olds about sexual education.

The educational specialists who were in favour of this gave a very detailed argument for this stating that the only purpose of this particular type of education was for children to tell their parents on whether or not there were being abused.

Maybe this will clear it up for those who think it will encourage exploration.
If a kid doesn't know whats being to them is wrong, how will they know to
speak up.
