Sergio Martinez: I Want Chavez Jr. First, Then Mayweather

Middleweight king Sergio Martinez appeared on the latest edition of The Boxing Lab, BoxingScene.com's official audio show. An agreement was recently reached that will match Martinez versus the winner of the June 16th clash between Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Andy Lee.

Martinez has been chasing Chavez, who is favored to beat Lee, for years. A skeptical Martinez said that he won't be entirely confident that he will fight Chavez until he sees him inside of the ring.

"Until I see Julio Cesar Chavez in the ring with the gloves on and the bell sounds I won't believe it," Martinez told The Boxing Lab.

I asked Martinez if he would still fight Chavez in September if he was offered a fall showdown against pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr.

"What a tough question. Sincerely I am only thinking of Chavez now but Mayweather is the toughest fightout there. I really want the challenge. Mayweather is the toughest fight I can have. I want to fight other champs too but no one wants to fight me," said Martinez.

Martinez said that he didn't want to talk about other potential fights as all of his focus is on facing Chavez. "I want to stay positive. I want to be 100% positive that Chavez will fight me. I can't focus on other fights that may or may not happen."

The Argentine sensation said that in a perfect scenario he would fight Chavez in September and then Mayweather in his next fight. While he has so far been unsuccessful in landing the big fights he craves, Martinez has remained up beat.

"The perfect dream scenario for me is to fight Chavez in September and then Mayweather after," Martinez revealed.

If he beats a damn near 180 lbs Chavez (and that's what he will weigh come fight night), he ain't getting no parts of Floyd.

PED's speculation & huge size difference I would be careful taking a fight with dirty ass Top Rank if I was Sergio...:smh:

however Sergio is the Giant Killer

when PBF gets by Cotto if he doesn't try to get a fight with Canelo I think he will pursue Sergio for a huge fight...

only way PBF can redeem himself with the Pac fiasco these past few yrs

I don't know, he would really have to look too spectacular. My thing is if Sergio can ko Chavez Jr Paul Williams style, and Chavez will prolly weigh more like 190 the night of the fight, then he's definitely not getting a fight with Floyd and he could probably KO a 168lb'er so roll the dice and gamble against a dude like Froch or Ward. But if the fight turns out to be a close FOTY candidate and Sergio barely loses or wins, Floyd might take that fight. Sergio will have much more of an audience following a fight like that and there will be more of a storyline to build up hype for that kind of fight. Especially if in between now and then Floyd beats Cotto and another(bigger)top 154lb'er. I don't see him fighting the winner of the Khan/Peterson fight - no money in it. Maybe Berto at 154 if he beats Ortiz. He'll probably fight Canelo next in all likelihood. But if Tim Bradley shocks the world I think that would put him at or near the top of the list.

I can't disagree with any of that.
Depending on what happens with Peterson/Khan II, the winner could get his name in the race but they could also set themselves up for a third fight (if Khan wins a good, close fight).
Canelo, if he beats Mosley, moves to the head of the line, definitely. Bradley, if he beat Pacquiao, would but he's an Arum guy and Bob will stand in the way of that fight.
Even if Berto wins, I'd prefer to see him fight someone else, maybe even give Ortiz a third fight (I'm a sucker for rematches and considering how profitable they are, I don't know why more fighters aren't).

I see Martinez stopping Chavez but it won't be in a one punch fashion. More than likely the Ref stepping in after a gang of mean, clean shots. I think Floyd has put himself in a corner with this shit and will have to fight Martinez unless Pac magically realizes that he doesn't have many bargaining chips. That shit is very possible, because who the fuck is going pay to watch him fight Bradley? If the numbers come in low like I think they will... that might be the wake up call.

Good points. I'd forgotten that Bradley is now a TR fighter.

This talk of Martinez/Chavez is all talk...

Chavez's people will not put him in with Martinez, not this year or next...they gotta milk him some more.Just like Arum is milking Pac...

I actually agree, but I also think Chavez has Mexican fans... and their pride won't allow him to keep ducking while getting their respect/money. Also it is getting harder and harder to make 160 so he might be trying to get what he can before he tests the water at 168 or 175.
