BoxingScene.com caught up with middleweight king Sergio Martinez, who watched unbeaten Julio Cesar Chavez make weight for his first defense of the WBC middleweight title against Peter Manfredo, which takes place later tonight in Houston, Texas.
Martinez has been campaigning for fights against the top two pound for pound fighters in the sport, Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao. He also has been lobbying for a shot at Chavez and WBC president Jose Sulaiman has previously stated that Chavez must face Martinez in his next fight.
The Argentine wasn't very optimistic in getting a fight against Pacquiao even before the Filipino struggled in his third meeting with Juan Manuel Marquez. Now he knows the fight is out of the question.
"I thought Marquez won the fight. First Manny said to meet him at 150 pounds and I said okay. Then he said 147 so that is telling me he doesn't want to fight," said Martinez. "Now after the Marquez fight I know there is no way he will fight me."
Martinez is now setting his sights on Chavez and Mayweather.
"That is why I am here in Houston (to face Chavez). I hope to face him or Mayweather for my next fight. I would love to fight Mayweather in May."
