Schaefer Has Options For Khan, Depending on The Weight

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer tells BoxingScene.com that there are many opportunities still remaining for former champion Amir Khan.

On Saturday night at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Khan (26-3, 18KOs) was stopped in four rounds by Danny Garcia (24-0, 15KOs), who unified the WBC/WBA titles with the victory.

Prior to the fight with Garcia, Khan was already planning to make his welterweight debut in the fall.

There is still a good possibility that Khan will pursue a move to the welterweight division for his next ring appearance.

If Khan decides to remain as 140-pounds, Schaefer feels the biggest possible option would be a rematch with Garcia - a fight that HBO would love to secure.

In the near future, Schaefer plans to sit down with Team Khan and discuss the proper path for the British star's next fight.

"For Amir, the question is going to be if wants to stay at 140, or move up to 147," Schaefer told BoxingScene.com.

"[At 147], there could be Devon Alexander is he wins against Randall Bailey. If [Robert] Guerrero would win [against Selcuck Aydin], a fight with Guerrero. I can even see a rematch with [WBA champion] Paulie Malignaggi, at 147. Paulie has looked very good. Amir coming off this now, going for a title at 147, I could see that. There are definitely opportunities at 147.

"And I think if he wants to stay at 140, I think the only real big fight at 140, let's face it, would be a rematch with Garcia."

A move to 147 might be good for Khan. I mean there's been no talk of Cotto having a glass jaw since he moved up from 140. But everyone at that weight was dropping Miguel, maybe the same might happen with Khan. He might actually need that extra weight.

It is pointless if Khan doesn't change his corner.

Yeah, we made that point a while ago though. I know I've been critiquing his sloppiness for a minute now. Freddie was similar to most of his fighters though - he blocked punches with his face. If Floyd Sr. is still training cats then Khan's people need to get on that, Sr. will teach him some damn defense.

Khan could have easily broke that cat down. He has every tool to do it. He lost his shit based on style alone. I think Richardson or Steward could also get him right. A stiff jab, movement and some solid defense could turn him into a beast. Reckless combinations and that Pac defense will lead to permanent damage. If he can't see it then I hope he retires.

Trying to find some sugar in that shit, Khan's sloppiness cost him again but he showed some heart to keep fighting. That said, the way he was taking shots, Kenny Bayless might have saved him.

But I enjoy watching cocky guys who haven't done anything take a thrashing. I like Adrien Broner but he probably needs a humbling too.

:hmm:

Broner is my fav prospect right now

Broner actually has the skills to back up his talk right now...next Broner is like any other young fighter that wants the big fights & big pay days he needs to market himself & nobody loves to hate or hate to love an arrogant fighter....

I really like Broner because he is an entertainer out there he likes to put on show for the fans...Escobedo is in a world of trouble in Cincy this weekend

I like him and I think he's the truth but he's in someone else's lane right now. I'm not suggesting he needs to someone he's not but he needs to rethink this current approach. Being a "villain" has been done by the best and is still being done by the best (even if he's locked up right now). Doing the cha-cha with a guy isn't entertaining, it's ridiculous. Knockouts are exciting. He seems to have a naturally extroverted personality so just let that shine without the extra. Chad Dawson doesn't have half his personality or desire but he's a top guy based on his talent alone so it can be done.
I don't necessarily want him to get beat, just get touched a little.

Broner is arrogant but also charismatic...I've watched his pre & post conferences too...

& fam dude has me rolling...he has the whole room full of media rolling with the shit he says.....

unlike Mayweather he has charisma to back up his attitude...even after he beat Perez the comments he said were clever & witty...he actually entertains you with the talk....

he is spitting bars...dancing to the ring ...he is a entertainer a showman...I have no problem with that as long as you back it up...which he has been doing so far...young brotha just trying to stand out...& his style is crowd pleasing

if every Boxer/human were the same the sport/world would be a boring place

don't get me wrong I like the gentlemen of the sport...I like the silent cats who say what they mean...mean what they say like Cotto, The Klits even Joe Louis

but I also love the arrogant Mayweathers, Prince Hameds, RJJ of the sport

I like some spice when it comes to fighters too...

Gary Russell Jr.

Him too.
I just watch him and want to tell him "Slow down, homie." When you're good, the money will come.
Hell, even if you're not that good but can look like you are, the money will come.

You're preaching to the choir as far as liking guys with color. I used to love watching Cory Spinks come down to the ring. I like Floyd's bullshit. I like Broner too but I think he's pushing too hard, too fast and I wouldnt want him to be seen as "Floyd Jr" or worse a Floyd-knockoff. I really enjoyed him on the "2 Days" mini-doc HBO showed. He has an engaging personality but the extra that happens in the ring will turn people off and that's different from people wanting to see him lose as it is with Floyd.

I mean any brotha who is from the hood with arrogance will come off like Floyd thats not fair....

dude comes from a different city & confident & he is trying to market himself ppl are not going to get excited with just action now ppl want personality....

I don't think he wants to be Floyd like cats swear he wants to be...same shit I've heard about Dirrell...once Dirrell started to fight with a slicker style & more defensive cats were talking about he copying Floyd's style...

I don't think consciously goes out to be a Floyd knockoff but that's the impression he's putting off and he should recognize that. So when the marketing aspect comes up in meetings (I hope it does and that there actually are meetings), he and his team need to figure out how to cut a path that doesn't make people compare him to Floyd in any way except whooping people's asses in the ring.
And people do get excited by just action. Manny Pacquiao is one of the biggest draws in the last few years and his English is shit with a dull personality to match. Putting dudes on their back will put asses in seats.

Garry Russell only similarity to Floyd is his brittle ass hands...

:lol::lol:

Pac is also not American & English is his 2nd language...how about Mayorga dude can't speak a lick of English but is the most arrogant fighter ever with little skill to back up the attitude but still gets pretty decent fights because of his following

we in a social media age ppl want to know their athletes they want to relate to them some how IMO....

Broner is just a arrogant dude...I doubt he studies Floyd or desires to be him...desires making Floyd money YES

Floyd never rap to ring...dude just trying to have fun & stand out without disrespecting his opponent...he's only 22 I have no problem with that as long as you back it up & don't get carried away

I think you forget that it was Russell, NOT Broner who was prospect of the year last year. And them brittle ass hands look like CGI when he throws combos.

I'll put money on Russell turning out to be the man and Broner turning into Zab Judah in a couple of years.

And yes - Broner IS trying his hardest to be Floyd, in attitude and boxing style. Thing is Floyd didn't become money May until he'd actually done something - and that took years.

Until he actually comes off that tomato can tour they got him on and move up in weight to where there are some opponents for him, all his talk is just hot air.

I 100% agree but I think he does get carried away and does venture into being disrespectful.

Mayorga had a following because he was exciting. He talked all that shit of course and it was fun and funny but he had an exciting style that made people want to see his fights. All the flash means nothing if there's nothing in the ring but if you have the talent without the flash, the money and big fights will happen.

Zab??? Really???? Aw, don't say that, merce. I would hate for that to happen to the guy.

fam you never like Broner :smh:...& he is on the same can tour as Canelo...who just beat up an old Shane...they are both young prospects 23 and younger let homie build on his resume...like his handlers are going to throw homie to the wolves to prove something right now

do you call Donaire's campaign a Can tour? dude is beating nothing but bums but gets high praise...how about the can tour JCC Jr has been on?

cats just don't like dude thats aight but lets not act like he is the only one getting favorable macth ups right now

you got top 5 P4P fighters beating up on Matebula & nothing negative is said about that

Mayorga was more disrespectful to his opponent remember his behavior against DLH some classless shit...dude blows cigar/cig smoke in his opponents face....talk about Vargas' wife but Broner is more classless

I don't make any bones about that shit. I don't like dude, I look at him and see a wannabe, an imitator. The difference between Broner and the cats you just mentioned is one word - humility. Donaire didn't act like he had just beat Sonny Liston and Chavez Jr for all his bullshit doesn't act like he's the second coming of Carlos Monzon, they KNOW they are beating cans, so they stay quiet as kept, Canelo as well. Broner acts like he just took apart Pacquiao after every fight. Dudes like that are so full of themselves and their own hype that when they get brought down to earth, they don't know how to handle it and they usually crumble. Zab never recovered from the Kostya fight. Khan never truly recovered from the Prescott thing, Prince Naseem never got over the Barrera fight. It's been proven over and over with these flashy, talkative dudes who believe they are God's gift to boxing. Dude is just a PROSPECT and he acts like he's top 5 dead or alive. EARN that shit, until then keep quiet.

well I like Cotto's gentleman behavior & I also like Broner cocky behavior

True, and it's not like Cotto's defense has improved.

I agree 100%. This Broner guy tries to stand the same way as Floyd, punch the same way, same defense, and he even makes the same faces during the fight! Broner must have some serious man love for Mayweather. I just want to see how far he'll get being an imitator.

I do think the level of comp for guys like Canelo does get picked apart as well. When he was talking like he "earned" a fight with Mayweather, none of us were buying it. It's not about throwing him to the wolves, we all get handling a fighter but the fighting needs to catch up to the rhetoric soon.
Donaire shouldnt be in this conversation. He has legitimate names on his resume.

Mayorga was more disrespectful to his opponent remember his behavior against DLH some classless shit...dude blows cigar/cig smoke in his opponents face....talk about Vargas' wife but Broner is more classless

He was trash for that and at that point all he had was tough talk. What skills he had were gone at that point. But you knew that the fight was going to be extremely violent and that's what people pay to see.
I don't remember saying Broner is worse than Mayorga, far from it. The scale is "Not Disrespectful At Alll...Mayorga". There is a sizable in between. Right now, Broner is more just a flashy guy but he does have lapses of disrespect that he should work on.

That's how I'm afraid people will see him and he won't get the credit due.

I never referred to Broner as classless. I don't care about antics trying to hype a fight - but dude believes that he is elite already and I'm just really big on dudes EARNING their spot. Until you earn your spot just stfu and fight. I also don't like biters and I think he bit Floyd's WHOLE style and even persona, that shit is just a big turn off for me. But you do notice I haven't put his skills down at all - the kid is the real deal as far as that goes.

Idk man i hope not, but there are similarities. Although one thing dude definitely has going for him is work ethic, which Zab was very iffy with. And if he sticks to that and doesn't let the other bullshit get to his head, just stay focused, he could reach huge heights. He just seems like the kind of guy that will believe his own hype, I hope I'm wrong, I don't wish the brother anything bad believe me. I just don't like dudes attitude, straight up.
