Savannah State criticized for scheduling football games it has no chance to win

Star recruit thinking process:

Go to an HBCU, get a full ride, hope to get on TV and play a "big school" so scouts pay attention, hope make it to the NFL to make the money you couldn't make as a student.

Go to USC, get a house, get a stipend, get a "job" where I don't even have to show up, watch money migrate to my bank account and see my family get taken care of, play on national TV every week, make Sportscenter every week, be the face of a "franchise", become a celebrity, live in LA and get treated like a hollywood star does.

Which would YOU choose?

Exactly..

Fellas let's face the facts. Once schools like Bama, Tenessee, Ole Miss, and all the other schools in the south opened their doors to the black athlete the fate of the HBCUs were sealed slowly but surely. Look at hall of famers like Willie Lanier, Buck Buchanon, Harvey Martin, Walter Payton, Willie Brown, and John Stallworth for example. These guys all went to HBCUs because most of them weren't recruited by the big powerhouses. Grambling used to send a ton of players to the NFL. Now those same type of players are playing D1 ball.

Now it's a whole different ballgame. I don't blame SSU, FAMU, and any other HBCU for taking a certified ass whupping to keep the lights on in the gym.

:lol::lol::lol::lol:This is a serious fuck'n topic but man I don't know why this shit you just said has me on the floor

Florida State should play their starters only 2 quarters. I figure the games should be out of hand by halftime. Empty the bench and get the young guys some playing time.

Ironically, that's how Bobby Bowden built FSU as an independent. Took the whuppings & money...while building the program. Turned their stadium from an erector set to a brick palace.

that is what I'm talking about.
now, what about the big HBCUs like Hampton and Howard. Why can't they compete in college basketball on a high level.

how is it that HBCUs can't recruit top high school basketball players. I'm not talking about the blue chips, but the kids just below that level.

I'm telling you, it is pure incompetence on the part of HBCUs.

Perhaps because those schools care more about their academic reputation than winning on the athletic field. Furthermore, it takes 2(& many more) to seal the deal. Just because a HBCU recruits a kid, doesn't mean he's going there. Especially if his high school &/or AAU coach is out there making deals...

excuses, excuses, excuses.

there really isn't any reason other than incompetence why HSBCs can't compete with the bigger white schools in basketball.

it takes a hardworking coach and AD with a plan. It doesn't happen over night, but over time. Look what Rick Majerus did with Utah. Look at the success a small school like Gonzaga has had in the tournament over the years.

who knows. Maybe Norfolk state is the school that raises the level of basketball at HSBCs. Show the other HSBCs that they can compete on a high level when it comes to college basketball.

So are you saying that EVERY SINGLE athletic department at HBCU's is being ran incompetently?? :hmm: When I was deciding where I would play college basketball, I had a golden opportunity to play at two schools in the SIAC(the conference Savannah St used to be in before going D1) amongst other offers. I had TWO scholarships on the table and one coach begging me to play. You know what I did? I went to UGA for the chance to WALK-ON to their team, which I didn't even make! But I still had the time of my life b/c hey...that is the University of Georgia! A coach and an AD can only take a program so far...eventually a Rick Majerus is going to need a Keith Van Horn to show up on campus. A Mark Few is going to need a Dan Dickau or Adam Morrison to take a chance on them. Coaches don't score and they don't defend well either. Duke plays EVERY ONE of their games on NATIONAL TV...with the exception of like 3 per year. So does UNC and Kentucky. How can Howard or Hampton get ANY player to come there when these schools are offering too? Coaches are the difference in winning a game here and there. PLAYERS are the difference in winning CHAMPIONSHIPS!

Recruiting these days are so easy, if you're a good player on a bad team coaches will find you especially in football. But back to the topic.

Some of these HBCUs are getting FBS players who was either suspended or guys who got home sick. If you work/play hard scouts will find you. Also not too many HBCUs has recruiting budgets to bring in guys from the north for visits. So facing big name schools brings in the revenue.

PWCs do offer the best situation on being on TV weekly, treated like a celeb but those student athletes has to have the mindset of going to school get that degree and network.

Both sides should be criticized! The Punkass big schools that take those fuck'n games are cowards for doing it too. Those smalls schools don't give a fuck about those kids, they just want that check. Fuck'n Georgia State has only had a fuck'n football program from 3 years and they have already played half the fuck'n SEC. Thats absolutely ridiculous. Alabama is ranked #1 in the country and they have 3 FCS schools on their schedule (I know everyone does it, just using Bama as an example). There is nothing about that, that spells champion.

At least Alabama played Michigan out the gate

It is all about Savannah State taking these ass whipping in order to make money for the school. But, it's not just them ... it's the whole Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. All the other schools in the conference are playing big football programs for money to help their universities:

North Carolina Central vs Duke (Sep 15)
Bethune-Cookman vs Miami (Sep 15)
South Carolina State vs Arizona (Sep 15) & Texas A&M (Sep 22)
Morgan State (not playing anybody big)
Howard vs Rutgers (Sep 8)
Norfolk State (not playing anybody big
Delaware State vs Cincinnati (Sep 15)
Hampton (not playing anybody big)
Florida A&M vs #5 Oklahoma (Sep 8)
North Carolina A&T (not playing anybody big)

when i was at Georgia Southern, schools from BCS conferences were terrified to play us. at the time we were a powerhouse in D-1AA....ranked #1 in the nation in rushing and points scored. and after seeing us put up 45 points against a Pac-10 school, even schools like Florida and UGA didnt want to put us on their schedule. Now although Savannah St. isn't close to being a powerhouse anytime soon, I can see why they did it.....exposure pretty much. But they shouldn't subject their players to that type of abuse and ridicule when they know they are way outclassed and legitimately have no chance of winning at all.

Michigan was way over-ranked just for the purpose of that game. They were the perfect team for Bama. That was like watching a washed up fighter/boxer with a big name get their ass beat.

Were you there when in the late 90's early 2000? Georgia Southern was the truth then. That RB yall had with the stutter, dude was the truth for real.

Miami Hurricanes always play Bethune or FAMU. We play them because it helps them financially. But UM never runs up the score. After about 37 pts UM shuts it down

i was on the basketball team from 95-99, but i was still working and living there when Paul Johnson was running the program and they had Adrian Peterson. dude had over 100 yards rushing in every single game he played in....including the post season. i think during that time we averaged between 40 and 50 points per game.

HBCU's need to start attempting to compete in sports. Alabama State is making the first leap by building a nice facility. They are looking to step up to Division 1 (BCS). They started to invest into their school and so far it is paying off.

Yeah! Adian, that dude was the truth. I loved watching him run, dude was a beast. He deserved a better chance in the NFL.

Man, HBCU's barely have enough to have maybe half their teams on scholarship.

When I was at Morgan State, we had 4 players on our team on scholarship. 4.

Basically all the mid majors have the full allotment of 12-13 scholarships.

Ragging on HBCU's for not competing with them shows a complete lack of understanding of simple mathematics.

If you can't afford to have more than 5-6 guys on scholarship without having your school lose a ton of money, it's impossible to compete with mid majors...some have endowments in the hundreds of millions of dollars...while many HBCU's are less than 10-15 million.

The only thing that really helps are the schools that get a ton of cash assistance from the state...Florida for instance gives a TON of cash to Florida A&M. Morgan State though here in Maryland, gets jack shit from the state of Maryland.

Why are people hating on HBCUs getting paid?

The MAC built their conference on being fodder for years. It takes $$$ to build training facilities and stadiums.

criticize the white schools?!?!? :smh:

If Im a top recruit why in the hell would I goto MLK State University, when I could attend a BCS School.

You sound like a dumbass. You do know that even most WHITE schools don't get blue chip players either right? Does that mean the Ivy league, Conference USA, Sunbelt, Southern Conference and the CAA aren't shit either? The majority of schools DON'T get blue chip athletes, the BCS window is very small on the grand scale of college athletics. SMH

By the way, ALL FCS teams schedule these games for a check not just HBCU's. How do you think Appalachian State was able to beat Michigan in the big house? Even low tier FBS schools have to schedule these games to balance budgets. College football opening weekend when you see Florida playing Buffalo do you think Buffalo isn't getting a check for that game?

Also gotta remember, elite football stars LOVE white women. can't get that at an HBCU. i'm dead serious too...

Put Savannah State against my Terps and we will struggle to kick a field goal. Fucking Edsall!
I know, wrong thread.

I don't see most hbcus making it another 10 years.
maybe sooner

That was the only reason I posted the article to show the difference between the hbcu and the more traditional University

HBCUs ain't shit.
they can't even compete with the big white universities in fucking Basketball.

every year during march madness, some small white college goes on a run. You never hear of a HBCU going on a run in March Madness.

pure incompetence and laziness on the part of ADs from HBCUs that they can't even compete in basketball against the bigger white universities.

You show a gross ignorance of how college athletics work.

Thank you.

Guys....... Please let this part marinate on your mind for one second.... some people are missing the bigger picture.

Yes.

I had to stop right here.

When I was there, (Tigers for life btw :hmm: ), and the school just moved divisions, we won like one damn game but our entire team had the highest combined GPA out of the rest of the schools in our division.

Something that the article is not mentioning : SSU IS a public school. It's an HBCU but it is governed by the state of Georgia. And it's this reason why most of it's money comes from government grants, alumni funding, and wherever else it can get money from that doesn't include the state.

The last big name I can remember coming from SSU was Shannon Sharpe back in 97. But trust it's no loss for us. We have new academic buildings, new residence halls to accommodate growing enrollment, and our academic programs STILL put rumors to bed. People come to Savannah thinking we a party school, they don't have to work - then they drop out after maybe two years because they can't keep up. If the AD thinks this is what he needs to do get money and to build a program then so be it. One player got a concussion? ANY player could have gotten a concussion at ANY game. Long as he can walk away, why is that a factor? Some of y'all is so focused on 'it's a school with a wack athletic program - ha ha' but you forget that it's still a school. A school that needs money to function. A school that despite its being blackballed (I'm saying this figuratively and literally) from the organization that gives it money to stay afloat, still produces functioning graduates.

I DARE you to find a more group of capable, educated individuals than those that have graduated from SSU. WE KNOW our football team isn't the greatest. But that doesn't mean Savannah State University, established 1890, currently on our 12th president - isn't the greatest. Not by a long shot.

Because we are.

Also gotta remember, elite football stars LOVE white women. can't get that at an HBCU. i'm dead serious too...

Oh sush with that.

I had a class with a white girl named Winter White

AKA's had a white girl come out Spring of 05

And I personally know a chick graduated in 06 that was  white

Exactly. Only in the last 10 years or so has the MAC been taken sort of seriously by people.

Leave the HBCU's alone.
