Trump suggests U.S. could back Saudi Arabia in a war with Iran because the kingdom 'pays cash'

President Trump said he has not promised Saudi Arabia the U.S. will offer protection in the event the kingdom goes to war with Iran, but Saudi investments in the U.S. over the years have at least inspired the president to consider sticking by the U.S. ally. And he apparently really appreciates that the country "pays cash" when making those investments.

Trump made the cash comment in response to a question about whether the U.S. was prepared to enter a conflict alongside Saudi Arabia in the wake of drone strikes on two major Saudi oil production facilities that may or not have been orchestrated by Tehran. Trump maintained that he doesn't want to get involved in a conflict, but added that he is willing to "work something out with" Saudi Arabia, whose allegiance with the U.S. has raised many an eyebrow thanks to human rights abuse allegations against the kingdom.

"They've been a great ally," he said to reporters Monday before a White House meeting with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman. "They spend $400 billion in our country over the last number of years." And, unlike other countries, Trump said, Saudi Arabia does not want any conditions. "No. No," the president said. "Saudi Arabia pays cash." Tim O'Donnell

This weekend’s attacks on Saudi oil production were a warning sign that the always-dangerous Persian Gulf is sliding toward a set of dangers that Donald Trump is entirely unequipped to handle. The drone attacks that knocked 5 percent of global oil production offline illustrate both the emerging texture of modern warfare and the externalities that test every American president.

Worst of all for both American and global security, the attack exposes Trump’s shit-tier leadership for what it has always been: weak, strategically unmoored, and capricious.

Donald Trump’s dick-swinging tough-guy act has always had a demonstrable falsity to it, a gimcrack exterior of bluster and martial swagger that sells only to his credulous base of reality-TV-addicted cultists. International crises are measured in the most stark and painful terms; in blood and treasure. There’s no next-day Kellyanne Conway spin or safe-space-crying pillow on Fox & Friends when the stakes are global stability and order—particularly when the dancers at this hoedown will soon have nukes and human lives are at stake.

Saudi crown prince: War with Iran would cause 'collapse of the global economy'

Should a military conflict break out between Saudi Arabia and Iran, it will cause global mayhem, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman said. During an interview that aired Sunday night on 60 Minutes, bin Salman said the price of crude oil would spike to "unimaginably high numbers" if there is a war. "The region represents about 30 percent of the world's energy supplies, about 20 percent of global trade passages, about four percent of the world GDP," he said. "Imagine all of these three things stop.

This means a total collapse of the global economy, and not just Saudi Arabia or the Middle East countries."

Bin Salman said he agrees with the U.S. assessment that an attack on Saudi oil facilities earlier this month was the work of Iran, and while the world needs to take "strong and firm action to deter" the country, he strives for peace in the region. Tehran denies the accusation.
