The arrogance of the atheists: They batter believers in religion with smug certainty

S.E. Cupp

Back in college, while I was busy pretending that a blottoed discussion of Nietzsche over $1 beers made me an intellectual giant, my fiftysomething father, who'd worked so hard to send me there, was quietly being saved. Having long eschewed any ties to his Southern Baptist upbringing, he suddenly found himself born again and on a quest to know God better.

As a longtime atheist, I was a little surprised. But eventually I came to be relieved by this development. While my friends' fathers were buying flashy sports cars and exchanging their wives for models, my own father was turning inward and asking: Is there more to life than this?

I was also proud of him for becoming a student again. As I watched him pore over C.S. Lewis, Lee Strobel and even neoatheist thinkers such as Sam Harris and Christopher Hitchens, I thought it amazing that he still wanted to learn something new.

It was a revelation I'd experience over and over again - meeting faithful believers and discovering that, no matter how long they'd been in the fold, many were still on a dogged quest for spiritual knowledge.

And it's why I decided to go back to school as well and study religion in a more meaningful way. It wasn't necessarily an acknowledgment of a higher power, but a realization that I knew little about the beliefs I had railed so arrogantly against.

Which brings me to the problem with modern atheism, embodied by the likes of Harris and Hitchens, authors of "The End of Faith" and "God Is Not Great," respectively. So often it seems like a conversation ender, not a conversation starter. And the loudest voices of today's militant atheism, for all their talk of rational thought, don't seem to want to do too much thinking at all. As James Wood wrote in The New Yorker, "The new atheists do not speak to the millions of people whose form of religion is far from the embodied certainties of contemporary literalism. Indeed, it is a settled assumption of this kind of atheism that there are no intelligent religious believers."

What spiritual quest are they on, except to put an abrupt end to those like my father's? For them, the science is settled, the data are conclusive and the book (no, not the Good Book) has been written. Time for everyone else to pack up and move on to other business, like, presumably, accumulating wealth and fulminating at the sight of the nearest Christmas tree.

The militant atheist wants nothing more than to spoil the believer's spiritual journey. That's both meanspirited and radically unenlightened.

SE Cupp has a very strange agenda. She's quite the character.

She's totally left off the part about religious persecution of people for centuries, and now thinks that Athiesm is all about ENDING conversations instead of opening up the larger conversations. wow.

You know what I find funny??

Some athiests are quick to debate how evil the church actually is and use examples of the 15th century Crusades and so forth but when you bring up African Americans and 18th century slavery they say 'get over it ... that happened so long ago" ...

The militant atheist wants nothing more than to spoil the believer's spiritual journey. That's both meanspirited and radically unenlightened.

c/s

imo a lot of atheists think because they are informed they can be disrespectful ... but they are also believers ... because there is no proof we all believe in something

In other words: "I don't believe in god" is another way to express "I believe there is no god" ... either way you actually don't know

Religion is spirituality for dummies http://www.stevepavlina.com/blog/2008/05/10-reasons-you-should-never-have-a-religion/

it's actually the end of faith.

Science and reason are anti faith.

And Christianity must not be accepted as whole truth. But you must replace it with some source of faith, you will need it. Faith is a delicate issue you should never really debate, you never know when you gonna need yours...after you let people feast and pick over it like a cow carcass. :smh:

Never had a conversation with an atheist....but I imagine it would go like this:

"God is not great"

:puke:...My back (can't let none of that rhetoric seep in)

p.s. don't fuck with people's God http://bootlegpsych.blogspot.com/2009/05/dont-fuck-with-peoples-god-pt-1.html

Most atheist's arguments are straw man arguments.

They take the comments of ignorant 'believers' and apply that to ALL believers.

Then they bring up crusades and how religion has been used to kill people- but the fact is, without religion there would have been another reason they'd find to hate and kill.

Look at America. Here, the primary means of categorization is race. So we discriminate and kill based on that.

Overseas in countries where everyone is the same race, it's religion and where you're born or living.

And you can't believe that those who use religion for nefarious purposes signifies that religion is inherently bad.

When used properly it can be used to inspire, to create. But throughout history you've had people in positions of power who use it for THEIR gain, and not for others.

Hell it's like white people who base their perception of black people on the rotten group, then assume every black person is like that.

I'm sure you black atheists get mad about people who do that. Go figure.

"Indeed, it is a settled assumption of this kind of atheism that there are no intelligent religious believers."
This is my biggest problem with most atheists. I have seen some truly stupid individuals assume a position of intellectual superiority based SOLELY on their lack of a belief in any deity. I don't go through life bashing peoples' beliefs or quests for answers. Its not important to me. As far as I'm concerned, aggressive atheists and aggressive bible-thumpers are in the same category, except those atheists are twice as annoying by going the extra mile with the idea that if you don't see everything exactly as they do then you are stupid. Its pure arrogance.

Religion and the belief in any god is a learned behavior. I think believers were just taught to believe and they can't fathom anything else. You can try to intellectualize it all you want but at it's core believers believe that there is a all knowing, magical guy in the sky that dictates the way of the world. They will never meet, see, touch or talk to this guy but they have "faith" that they will. These same people would clown an adult if that adult told them they still believed in Santa Clause.

Person A: Wears a tinfoil cap, believes UFOs will descend from the skies and change human civilization as we know it.

Person A gets thrown into a mental ward and if forced to take meds.

Person B wears a cross and believes a jew zombie will descend from the skies and change human civilization as we know it.

Person(s) B is allowed to have institutions celebrating this belief, receives tax breaks from the gov't, more importantly INFLUENCE gov't, and feels persecuted by anyone who questions their jew zombie beliefs.

There is no difference between Person A and Person B.

So why should we (Atheists) be nice you theist assholes when you really should be locked away with Person A taking your meds and being treated for mental disorders?

I'm going to continue to shit on you till the day I die. Fuck your feelings. Deal with it. And until then...

It's not just about attitude and personality (although emotions are a huge part of why anyone believes anything) but it is also about logic and rational thinking. Sceptics, gnostics and cynics who only believe in what they can touch or see are called "realists".

There are many things in life that fall in a gray area not sensed by our 5 physical senses. Spirituality, mysticism and metaphysics are all dismissed by the realist. Yet quantum physics has encountered many unexplainable phenomena. To dismiss these instances and doggedly cling to your "realism" beliefs is an emotional reaction and is also an act of faith.

Logically and rationally unexplainable phenomena cannot be reasonably explained away as Santa Claus and The Easter Bunny. The universe has to make some kind of sense and be here for a reason and a purpose. It also had to have a beginning and had to have come from somewhere.

Our human brains are finite but the universe is not. Human behavior for centuries through organized religion does not negate the fundamental answers to our existence and that of the universe. We are all free to make our choices but let's be honest (keepin it real) in making that choice.

You can't compare what you call "spirituality", which is a delusion/form of mental illness to quantum physics because theories in quantum physics, no matter how bizarre, HAVE BEEN PROVEN TO EXIST. Your "spirituality" (speaking in general terms) has not, and most of the time that's curable with proper medication.

So until you have proven that it exists, it does not exists.

And here lies the problem - the fact that you think you somehow have the right to pass judgment on someone else's entire worth as a person solely based on whether or not they believe in a higher power.
If someone believes in Santa Claus, I don't automatically assume that because they believe in Santa, despite the fact that they could be a nuclear physicist or one of the top minds in the world, I am somehow superior to them because I don't believe as they do.
Most agnostics don't seem to fall into this category. In my experience, it always seems to be those who proudly brag about atheism as if its something of significance rather than just another personal trait and choice of opinion.
Usually, people who are like this, be they religious or atheist, seem to be trying to cover their own insecurities. They feel they need something to make them seem "special" (translation: superior).
I tend to ignore those "preaching the gospel of atheism" just as easily as I do those street corner preachers who shout at me as i walk by.
Its all just a chain of experiences and choices people make in life.

arrrrrrrgh!!!!

Logic ... you vulgar jerk, how dare you use LOGIC when emotions are so much more fun

Neo-Atheism is the new Anarchy... in about 10 years, they'll wake up and go; "What thee HAIL were we thinking back then?!" and have a laugh

There is no "gospel of atheism". It's a REALITY CHECK. It means GROW THE FUCK UP. It means PULL YOUR HEAD OUT YOUR ASS and PLANT YOUR FEET FIRMLY ON THE GROUND. It means DEAL WITH REALITY and stop ESCAPING TO THE IMAGINARY JEW ZOMBIE FOR ANSWERS TO REAL WORLD SITUATIONS.

You theist assholes have yet to explain the difference between the nut cases YOU throw in the psych ward and yourselves

Gay d walker is butt hurt again typical faggot defending his faggot swallowing views.

Your "spirituality" (speaking in general terms) has not, and most of the time that's curable with proper medication.

So until you have proven that it exists, it does not exists.

You don't prove spirituality in a laboratory. (Although their have been studies done on spiritual matters for example the scientific effectiveness of prayer) Science cannot explain nor is it capable of explaining the origins of life and the universe.

Even if we eventually can trace down some physical answers science cannot explain the reason and purpose of our existence and the existence of the universe. These questions have repeatedly come up during moments of inner reflection, awe inspiring moments and moments of extreme crisis or emotion for thousands of years.

Questions of a spiritual nature are inevitable natural human curiosities. To deny that by not acknowledging a spiritual realm is an attempt to satisfy that curiosity. It closes the entire door which is a shutdown and an easy escape route. At some point that closed mindedness masked as intellect can turn into petty human arrogance.

This is no better than the Christians and Muslims killing each other and again does not answer life's fundamental questions. Intelligent humans will always ask these questions because something in us instinctively yearns for that answer.

You are satisfied with the answer u have chosen to believe.

And all xtian asswipes do is shit on non xtians 25/7.

If you're an Atheists you will go to hell
If you are a Muslim you will got to hell
If you are a Buddhist you will go to hell
If you are Hindu you will go to hell

But these assholes have the nerve to get hyper sensitive because they are getting exposed for the retarded knuckle draggers they really are?

You don't prove spirituality in a laboratory.

You're going to have to prove your delusion, oops, I mean "spirituality" some way in order for the masses to understand WTF it is you are talking about, because your word is meaningless.

If I posted a thread talkin about I saw a ghost, you niggas would want pics, video footage, interviews with the ghost, etc. But I'm suppose to just "take a leap of faith" and believe your spirituality isn't a form of mental illness? You can't prove nor convey ANY of these spiritual happenings but I and others are suppose to just believe you are of sound mind because YOU said so? But in the same breath you'd be the same nigga grillin the next nigga for proof.

GTFOH.

Because I find radicals as much of an annoyance across the board, that somehow makes me a Christian?
That's radical speak. "You are not this, therefore you must be that" is radical conclusionists' reasoning.
Atheism is a SOCIAL CHOICE just like religion.
Some people are just not passionate about either subject in one way or another and both radical atheists and radical theists need to GROW UP and UNDERSTAND THAT.

There's nothing radical about not wanting delusional assholes to control public policy for the masses. And we've seen what a bang up job religion has done for the black community today
