...but I think the difference is that his comment was more just inappropriate for referencing what he referenced, but he didn't use the homo term, so nothing he said was really a slur. He didn't put anybody down. I don't think Roy was putting anybody down either, but the use of the word itself got him in trouble.

Homo is short for homosexual which is the scientific term for gay. If you are gay, then you are a homosexual or a homo, it's not a stereotype. If you're openly gay, how is being called a homo an insult?
It's like getting offended over African-American or Black. African-American is the scientific term, black is the simplistic term, just like Homosexual is the scientific term and homo is the simplistic term.

My problem with this is the same reason I have a problem with those offended by calling a person with a developmental disability retarded. Homosexual is the the biological term. Homo is not a slur, it's a term. Same way retarded isn't a slur it's the medical term for it.
