Roxanne Shante,,Who needs a Royalty Check?

Peace,

This is a fantastic story. I was wondering when it would make it to SOL. Sorry I can't help with the embed.

WOW.................that is AWESOME! Do the thing Shante!! That's one of the best stories ever!

What is interesting besides that fact that she had the desire to get a good education and fortitude to complete a PhD is the fact that the record company tried to discourage her from getting an education.

They don't care whether she gets a good education, they just didn't want to pay for it. Good for her!

Aside from MC Lyte, Roxanne Shante, was the 1, who put breakers in motion and rapped the hand clap...

It's amazing how a success story like this doesn't get any media play. Only show the negative right.

Of course the media would hide this. A smart black woman who beat the system at their game and came out on top is going to be kept a "secret" if they can.

I hate the media!!!!!!!!!!! :angry::angry::angry:

She does! Don't be fooled. She is far from rich!!!

I'm sure she isn't rich, but come on....she did something most artists of the past hasn't been able to do--beat the record companies at their dirty games!

Think about it--they had her written off as a black teenager mom who probably would get a GED at most. Girl got her Ph.D! WOW....

You think getting a college degree is cheap? I sure wish I didn't have any student loans to contend with. She got a Ph.D on their dime and that's great!

Getting a Ph.D is worth MANY royalty checks.

KEKE PALMER TO PLAY ROXANNE SHANTE: Actress cast in new film about hip hop's legendary Juice Crew.

"Akeelah and the Bee" star Keke Palmer will pick up a mic for her next role as 80s rapper Roxanne Shante in "The Vapors," an upcoming film about the formation and rise of hip hop's The Juice Crew.

The collective was formed during the mid-eighties by DJ Marley Marl and included, in addition to Roxanne Shante, rappers MC Shan, Big Daddy, Kane, Craig G., Biz Markie, Kool G. Rap and DJ Polo, Masta Ace, TJ Swan, Cool V and Tragedy.

The film is set in New York's Queensbridge Housing Projects, where the Juice Crew originated, and centers mostly around Marl, Biz Markie, Big Daddy Kane and Roxanne Shante.

In addition to Palmer, Clifton Powell has been cast as popular New York DJ Mr. Magic.

Due to begin production in January, 'The Vapors" will be helmed by Furqaan Clover, who just finished shooting the Wendy Williams biopic, "Queen of Media."

Not only that, but she shut up those who had no faith in her. Thinking that all she wanted was a little "15 minutes of fame" so she could be known in the hood. They tried to play her in the hopes that she wouldn't have the foresight to pick an education over money. Can you imagine, she got her record company to fork over over $175,000 for her education? I'm sure they would have dicked her over in royalties and she would have gotten less than that. Props to her.

Co-sign

They can't take her education away!

I loved this story when I first heard it. The best part is she was maaaaaaad young at that time and most people in the music industry were rather ignorant about the big picture, their rights and royalties, etc.

She was waaaaaaaaaaaaaay ahead of her time. I never understood why the average person working at a label had more benefits and health coverage, etc. than the artists who keep the ship afloat.

Now thats a smart black woman. Looks like there are some smart ones left that dont just shake ass on videos, chase ballers, and get pregnant by rich dudes.

WOW! Straight game time! Awesome story. All of these specials and documentaries on hip-hop as of late and not one nary mention of this. I tell you, this majority media machine is so full of bull!
