Ron Paul: Congressional Black Caucus opposes war because they want food stamps

The father of potential 2016 presidential candidate Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) claimed the Congressional Black Caucus only opposed war because they wanted more money for food stamps.

“I was always annoyed with it in Congress because we had an anti-war unofficial group, a few libertarian Republicans and generally the Black Caucus and others did not — they are really against war because they want all of that money to go to food stamps for people here,” former Congressman Ron Paul (R-TX) told Lew Rockwell earlier this month.

Paul’s comments were highlighted by BuzzFeed on Tuesday.

Rep. Barbara Lee — an influential member of both the Congressional Progressive Caucus and the Congressional Black Caucus — was the only member of Congress to vote against the war in Afghanistan. Lee, along with most of the members of the Congressional Black Caucus, also voted against the Iraq war.

I used to think Ron Paul had his head on halfway straight. But with this bullshit he has graduated to a special kind of stupid.

You must have been born after 1985.

Naw, I used to agree with his libertarian leanings. (Stay out of other country's affairs, legalize drugs, etc.) But I could never get down with him because he had a little too much redneck in him for me. Thus "halfway" straight.

Apples don't fall far from the tree.

That reminds me of an anecdotal story about a sociologist who followed the lives of two young twin brothers being raised by a violent alcoholic stepfather.

Thirty years later when the sociologist visited the first twin he found that he too had grown up to be an alcoholic with multiple assault convictions. When he asked why the twin replied "With an upbringing like mine why would I be any different?"

The sociologist visited the second twin and found him to be a non drinker with a clean criminal record. When he asked why the twin replied "With an upbringing like mine why would I be any different?"

I'll admit that I didn't know much about Rand Paul before reading this thread. Now that I have read the Wikipedia cliff notes it would appear that his positions are fairly reasonable and non discriminatory despite his Republican and Tea Party affiliations. That being said I have never been to Kentucky, let alone lived there, so I'm not going to stake my reputation on defending him.

Either way, his father put him in a position where he either has to publicly disown his flesh and blood or look like a complete racist prick. That is one of the lowest things a white public figure can do.

You didn't have to go to Wiki. There's quite a bit in this forum to inform about Rand Paul's positions:

After reading the links and the Cliff notes, which paint a somewhat different picture, I have cone to the conclusion that RP is a shrewd and calculating politician. One of the few that can be a card carrying member of the Tea Party and not be overtly racist. If he can distance himself from his aide, his press manager and his blundering dad and find a way to attract an organized black following he just might be the next Republican presidential hopeful.

I expect that a "sins of the father" speech will be coming shortly.

White people will never get it.

By law, the federal government cannot discriminate. By law, private businesses are allowed to discriminate.

Rand Paul wants to continue to allow private businesses to discriminate.

Except, however, if the activity of the private business is deemed to be in the 'stream of commerce' or 'substantially affecting commerce' the Constitution's Commerce Clause may very well permit governmental regulation of that activity. Hence, private restuarants may not discriminate based on race because the ketchup passes in commerce from state to state !!!

Check it out: in Heart of Atlanta Motel Inc. v. United States, 1964, SCOTUS held that Congress could use the Commerce Clause to make private businesses whose activity is deemed to be in the stream of commerce abide by the 64' Civil Rights Act. In that case, Heart of Atlanta, a funky 200+ room whites-only motel, prohibited "US". The Court held "not so" because many of the motel's guests (whites) crossed state lines (which is deemed in the 'stream of commerce'), hence, the Civil Rights Act of 64 was applicable and prohibited that discrimination.

But compare: Justice Roberts rejected enforcement of ObamaCare under the Commerce Clause because, as he reasoned, the Commerce Clause applies to things already in existence that moves in the stream of commerce -- and ObamaCare was not then in existence (it was being "created") -- thus, Congress did not have the power to regulate healthcare using the Commerce Clause.

I do get that. At least he was slick enough to promote a return to segregation in a subtle way. That's not easy to do.

I don't respect him as a man, but as a politician he is a keen enemy worthy of study
