I agree with most of what you said. I tried my best to describe a very subjective term. But I believe the majority of black folks (at least in the areas I'm familiar with) would feel that way about a non-threatening brotha even if they couldn't describe it in words.This is the nitty gritty right here....
And the reason I hate these dismissive titles is that they hold people to bullshit standards arbitrarily set up by others who have nothing better to than judge and complain.
RG3 saying he doesn't want to be known as a great BLACK quarterback but as a GREAT quarterback period has nothing to do with his loyalty to his race or ethnic group.
The Barkley comparison isn't a fair one because it only takes into account some things they have thats similar but discounts other things that make them completely different people.
Why wasn't michael jordan considered corny? He was definitely not threatening, always said PC shit and fucked MANY white bitches..
The term just seems arbitrary no to mention that parker linked the term as synonymous with being a sell out. And because the term is subjective that means that it can be molded into any meaning that fits anyone particular mood or mindset. And thats whats so destructive about it...it sets up an us vs them or youre different from us issue in a group and black people in general all over the world but particularly in america are the last people who should be doing that.
Thats why that kind of conversation should be had in public or private because all it does is divide and set up enmity between people.
The differences between Barkley and Rg3 to me, is the whole point. Because the difference is what separates corny from so called "real" brothas in most black circles..Its also funny you bring up Jordan, because Jordan was threatening, he was a known asshole and a jerk. The funny thing is, black folks picked up on that waaaaaay before white folks did. And black folks always loved Jordan. In fact, Jordan was so intimidating that defenders wouldn't even look him in the eye, and we knew what that was about early.
Anyway, I agree it is a arbitrary term and I too resent that it is linked to sell-out. But Im not going to act like it doesn't exist. I'm not arguing for what and what shouldn't be considered corny. I'm pointing out what currently is considered corny by the majority. (unfortunately) And in fact, i advocate for RG3 corniness.
