Roach: Pacquiao will break down Mayweather if they collide

The fight remains a dream showdown for now but trainer Freddie Roach already has an idea how his ward Manny Pacquiao will approach and break down Floyd Mayweather Jr if ever they climb the ring together.

“Floyd’s shoulder roll wouldn’t work against Manny," Roach said when he guested recently on ESPN. “If he wants to lay on the rope, we’d love that. Manny will go to his body and Floyd will be broken down."

Clamor for a possible Pacquiao-Mayweather bout remains high as ring aficionados want to see who will prevail in a battle between two pound-for-pound top guns.

Pacquiao has been the consensus P4P king since the unbeaten Mayweather retired a year and a half ago. Early this month, Mayweather announced his return to boxing, facing Pacquiao’s old rival Juan Manuel Marquez on July 18 and claiming he’s still the No. 1 fighter in the planet and the sport’s top draw.

Right after Pacquiao demolished Ricky Hatton in two rounds, the Pacman has been shopping for an opponent and Mayweather, being the former P4P boss, is among the frontrunners.

Being considered, too, are Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto and Sugar Shane Mosley with the names of Marquez, Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. and Edwin Valero also mentioned.

But if you ask Roach, anyone among Cotto, Mayweather Jr. and Mosley is the most likely next opponent for his prized ward, who’s eyeing an October 17 outing.

As to who will win the Pacquiao sweepstakes, Roach said it’s a matter of who’s the easiest to deal with (Read: He who would agree to the Pacman’s conditions on purse split and stipulated weight).

“All three of them are good fights, and I’d like to see us fight either one of them at a catch weight of 143 or 144 pounds. My guy is the champion at 140 pounds and all of those guys are welterweights so I’d like to see a catch weight to even the playing field a little bit," he said. – GMANews.TV

He said the same shit about De la Hoya, pardon me if I dont take Roach at his word.

Actually, he might not even get past Marquez! That isn't gonna be any cake walk. Floyd been layed up and he is getting old. Pacquiao might tap that ass.

I think the cotto fight will be the easiest to make and the hardest pbf. JmJ might be a cake walk or it might not. It all depends on how he carries that 12 pounds. I agree with roach. I like how wants to fight the bigger guys. But make them come down in weight.

Manny vs. Mayweather will be a contest of speed and power. Both boxers have proved to have both. When it happens, I'm definitely rolling with Mayweather on some ole pro black shit.

All Floyd will do is run from Manny and pick his shots. Now one goes toe to toe anymore esp Floyd. If Manny taps that jaw Floyd's going down, and Floyd knows this!

Why ain't nobody talking about the Marquez fight coming up? Marquez is a pure boxer and much better than Ricky Hatton in my opinion--> Marquez ain't no bum.

Mayweather can beat Marquez but it won't be easy.

Talk about the outcome of that before we bring up the Pacquiao Conversation. And Roach should know better as well since it was Marquez that gave Manny a run for his money everytime they fought.

How is this different from wanting guys to come up. He wants guys to come down to give Pacquiao an advantage since a figher saps his strength to make a lighter weight (see De La Hoya). At least when a guy goes up, he's more likely fighting at his true natural weight. Pacquiao beat DLH and Eric Morales (in the third fight) because they fought at an unnaturally small weight.

look, the Marquez fight is on the bill now. I like Pac-- but fuck Pac- We here on team PBF want PBF to concentrate on the fighter at hand. And we want Floyd to slow up on spending money, so that he aint lookin like an asshole 3-4 years from now, still trying to fight. Until he loses a step, he's the P4P, period. We won't know if he lost a step til he gets back in the ring. They're trying to distract our dude from the fighter in front of him right now.

Mayweather nut huggers in 5,4,3,2,1...

you can call it nut hugging but im personally tired of this shit about Mayweather getting his ass kicked. I know it is possible. Yet everytime some one challanges him, they talk this talk about beating him. Then the Mayweather "haters" come in and make a big case. To only see on fight night. Mayweather has his hands down to his side dodging punches in a corner on the ropes like Neo dodges bullets in the Matrix! then ends it with usually knocking the same person out.

So until i see osme one actually beat him i am just going believe he is that good. I will say, his time is coming. He is too old to be fighting some one younger and faster going get him.

There's a big difference!

A fighter gets respect for moving up in weight to fight a bigger fighter. It's a sign of heart.

You're trying to make a defense for Mayweather fighting Marquez at 147 pounds when Marquez has only had 2 fights at 135.

No defense for it.

Would anybody have question if Roy Jones wanted to fight Mike Tyson but said "not at 200, may be 190 but 200 is just too big"?

It is that much different. But it is how u do it. Cotto vs manny at 143 is lot different than cotto a 147 fighter going to 135 in one fight. Just like pbf fighting jmj at 147 after jmj last fight was at 135. It is a joke.

There is a reason no one is talking about the jmj fight. Nobody cares case it does even seem like a fair fight. Manny already worked up to 147 and is not fighting at that weight again. But jmj is and against pbf.

or Paul WIlliams

I didn't include Williams because that fight WILL NEVER happen. I don't think Wiliams will be fighting another welterweight. He couldn't get a fight against a welterweight so he had to go up to fight Winky.. after we he did to Winky.. a welterweight is not going to fight him..

As much as I dislike Floyd, no way Pacquiao beats Floyd. Who has Pacquiao beaten? Before you answer, think about. De La Hoya? Barrera? Morales? All these fighters have at least one thing in common: they all were way past their prime when they fought pacquiao.

Floyd would out hustled this kid with moderate effort.

The defense for it is called insanity. It is easy to call people haters but be irrational to the facts. But whatever.

Paq just like any number of overhyped fighters. He's no slick boxer just an activity fighter who doesn;t move his damn head. Floyd being bigger and more agile will take his power away and by the end of the fight when he's damn near worn out because of all the misses and counters by Floyd I expect to hear Timber as he falls.

You cats are blind.

I'm not saying that Manny beats Floyd but to think that would be an easy fight is crazy.

Manny's resume is much better than Floyd's. To me, Floyd's signature wins are Castillo and Corrales, 7 or 8 years ago.

Who has Many beaten? He just blitzkrieged, utterly fucking destroyed Ricky Hatton who just had a competive fight against Floyd. The Oscar Floyd beat was only slightly better than the one Manny beat.

Lol @ manny not fighting anyone. Damn bgol is better than comedy central. I hope they dont fight. Manny fight cotto or clottey is something i love to see. I am not interesting pbf vs manny at all. Shane and manny would be ill. I will watch paint dru before i was time on watching a talented fighter jsb and cover up for 12 boring rounds again. But if it is free i might peep his fight. But not for money.

Styles make fights and Im not sure if I would call that fight competitive. Manny defense is suspect and can be hit. Even though I question Floyd sometimes because there are some fights I think that should have happened. All that being said Floyd WAYYYYYY to slick for Manny. Floyd is how Roy was. Until he loses he wont lose lol. Not sure if that makes sense but too much is being made of this fight on the Manny side. The last fight he lost in 2005 to Eric Morales. E is no slouch but he is an effect counter puncher which left Pacman bloodied up. Now Pacman has gotten alot bigger and better but this is another step up in which you will see him out classed.

Hatton was and is a bum. He is brawler and cant box.

Manny is not gonna be outclassed by anyone. He's a southpaw with blazing speed and one punch knockout power. Anybody with those 3 characteristics is not gonna be outclassed by any one in their weight division.

Manny's defense is not suspect. He's not a defensive specialist but he has good defensive skills and excellent head movement. He is an aggressive fighter who is gonna get hit. He's not safety first.

Peace I beg to differ. There are some boxers / athletes period that even outclass good opponents. I dont think it will be Mayweather running through him BUT Many will not get many clean shots. Which negates alot of that punching power. He will also get hit. He will get hit alot against Floyd.

And with no defensive in boxing when 2 great fighters meet the one who gets hit less wins.

Peace

Like they say - Styles Make fights - I think Manny Pacquiao is fast compared to his competition.
If anybody remembers the Erik Morales vs. Zahir Raheem fight I think it would look pretty much the same way - slick boxer (PBF) avoiding the big punch & throwing mostly one punch at a time & mixing in a flurry every now & then for the win.
I'd pick all 3 over Pacquiao just because they're all used to fighting bigger guys.
I like Pacquiao, because he always has action fights, but he hasn't fought any boxers like those 3. All 3 are bad match-ups for him. (IMO)
