RIP Jimmy Cliff - Reggae Icon and lead actor in the ground breaking film "The Harder They Come" ~ has died at age 81.

"The Harder They Come" (1972) is a classic Jamaican crime drama starring musician Jimmy Cliff. Cliff plays Ivanhoe Martin, a character based upon a real-life Jamaican criminal of that name, better known as Rhyging, who achieved fame in the 1940s. The movie is famous for its brilliant soundtrack, especially the hit song based on the film's title. The film depicts the urban and rural landscapes of Jamaica, which fully immerse you in the surroundings as you go along with Martin's pursuit of his dream to become famous. But for some, achieving a purpose may cause a person to make rash decisions and move with a particular righteousness that others may disagree with. Yet, these approaches are what make him famous.

This film highlights the relationships Martin encounters when moving through Kingston, and these characters become an essential part of the story. I often found myself rooting for Martin to succeed, but he was also his worst enemy. In addition, a few social elements highlight the cut-throat music industry, the marijuana business, and police corruption. This film is one of my all-time favorite movies. I highly recommend it if you haven't seen it yet. And listen to the soundtrack too!
