As a kid I just knew him as a calypso singer and a clean cut elder statesman. I had no idea how impactful he was to the culture, and how much work he put in to the civil rights movement until I was much older. He lived a long, interesting, purposeful and impactful life...a life I hope for myself and every one of my brothers and sisters on this planet.

He and his best friend Sidney Poitier were two of the last living Black entertainers from that era, both good friends of MLK and champions of the CR movement. All we can do now is remember their battles and relish the art they left us.

My personal favourites of his are "Matilda", "Sweetheart from Venezuela", "Turn the World Around" (which he performed at Jim Henson's funeral), "Man Smart (Woman Smarter)", "Angelina", "Jamaica Farewell" and "Coconut Woman".

Rest in peace with the stars, Harry.
