So, I'm going to share my thoughts even though I told myself I would keep this story to myself. Last week, I sat in a café working on client matters when a woman sat across from me on the couch, preparing for a meeting. She nodded my way to say hello before her company arrived. I noticed he was a young man she was meeting. She soon began to discuss with him his sexual advances toward a physically developed 14/15-year-old girl who was part of a youth program they both were in. She was seriously concerned about his actions and sternly told him not to do it again with someone younger, especially since he was 19 at the time and also had a newborn child.
Moreover, he's also affiliated in gang activities and chose to meet her at the location, as it's considered a neutral territory.
The more I sat there, the more I heard about his situation, and the more my heart felt for this young man as his life was deeply entangled in violence and crime. He expressed this many times, often showing little regard for his own life, as he seemed ready to die at any moment. His outlook on life and living was that one negative event didn't matter much to him, despite having a child at such a young age. The sister spoke to him from the heart as her love and care started to show, having lost her little brother to gun violence a few years earlier. After a long conversation, she seemed to have finally reached him, ending with a heartfelt hug. She sees the potential in him—potential that no one else notices. When she hugged him, she could feel he was strapped and felt his weapon at his waist, but she chose not to scold him, understanding how tough life on the streets can be and the risks of retaliation through gun violence.
After the meeting was done, she apologized to me as I was so near and could overhear everything, and I responded to her that there was no need to apologize, as I also ran a program in the community about 10 years ago, looking to help young black boys and men away from the street life. We exchanged contact information with the hope of possibly collaborating one day.
The moral of the story is that, despite some of these young men acting out violently like animals, there are still those who can be saved, as long as there is at least one person who can see past the anger and violence and help them see their potential for humanity and future greatness.
