Richard Overton, oldest man in the US and WW2 vet dies at 112

Damn, he reminds me of my great grandpa!! RIP

I was lucky, just like alot of other kats on this site. I didnt start losing my great grandparents and grandparents til 2000 and I was at the age of 35. My grandparents told me alot of good information and trust me it was totally different than what Mcgraw@Hill had in those bullshit books.. Anyway, if your grandparents are alive enjoy every minute of it!!!

If you can record the stories in their own voice. Make sure all the old photos have the faces identified. Take digital pictures of the old pictures as well.

Bruh, your spot on about those pics.. I would give anything to hear my grandparents voices again!!

I hate he did good in and for a country that offers up empty platitudes for an individual that made sure that those that did not need a better quality of life excelled at one, while his generation was treated like an outcast.

He lived a long life, but I wonder how much more of a quality of life could he have if he was not in a country full of bigots, running it.

Rest easy, Soldier. You earned it.

Smoked cigars, drank whiskey and lived a long fulling life! Who said you can't do things in life on your own terms! Tip of the Hat to this great gentlemen! RIP!

This man lived a long, storied life and I'm thankful that it ended as beautifully as it did. Rest in peace, Elder. Whiskey and gar on deck today in your honor.

New
Just buried my old dude on the 21st. He was 99.

I historical things of his I brought home with me are amazing.

He is in the Sports Hall of Fame at Johnson C Smith and also lettered at Howard.

I have pictures of him playing baseball, football and basketball in "Negro Leagues"

Scrapbooks are amazing

He was able to trace and document hos mothers side of the family to slavery but his fathers family history is scattered because his father was from the islands

I'll miss the knowledge he had to share but I am happy he had so much documented to pass on

Much to respect to and for that man and his extended family. RIP.The significance of this man is as important to the youth of black america as George Bush and Barbara Bush is to the history books.
