Richard Jeni Dead: Comedian Found Shot, Self Inflicted?
By Jack Ryan
Mar 10, 2007
Richard Jeni, one of Comedy Central's Top 100 Comedians of All Time, is dead. According to police, Jeni was found dead presumably from a self-inflicted gunshot wound on Saturday, March 10, 2007. A loaded gun was reportedly found next to his body.

His website, richardjeni.com, has gone dark (except for a grayed-out logo) and the story is still developing. More information will be made available when we hear it.

The word being whispered -- among more than one party close to the deceased -- throughout the comedy grapevine is that Richard Jeni simply chose to end his life.

Jeni was in his West Hollywood, CA apartment. He had reportedly been scheduled to perform at the Chicago Improv last night, but cancelled several weeks ago.

It is said that he chose to take his life because he was ill. We could speculate, but out of respect for Richard and his family we will not.

Autopsy results are expected soon. We will offer further information as it becomes available.

Richard Jeni was an American stand-up comedian. He was raised in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, New York.

Jeni first received recognition through a series of Showtime stand-up specials and frequent appearances on The Tonight Show.

HBO brass noticed Jeni's talent, and he was soon picked up for his first appearance on the coveted HBO Comedy Hour in 1992, entitled Richard Jeni: Platypus Man. The show received critical acclaim, and Jeni would return for two more shows.

Throughout the 90's, awards and accolades continued to pile up, and Richard's growing popularity was making him a sold-out attraction in concert venues. A particular thrill was when George Carlin handed Richard the American Comedy Award for "Best Male Stand-up" on ABC TV.

Jeni hosted A&E's "Caroline's Comedy Hour" for two years and the show won the Cable ACE Award for "Best Stand-Up Comedy Show". He hosted the infotainment series "What A World" for The Learning Channel, and was nominated for "Best Magazine Host". He became a popular guest on all the major talk shows while sprinkling in stints as a sardonic and hilarious correspondent for "Entertainment Tonight".

Jeni would also star on the short-lived UPN sitcom Platypus Man and appear in the Jim Carrey film The Mask. He also has starred in various TV commercials for Certs, Arby's, and won a CLIO Award for his work as a writer/performer in a campaign for the Milk Association.

In 1998, a Coca-Cola executive in Atlanta heard some of Richard's routines on the radio and was inspired to create "Concession Stand-Up Comedy Starring Richard Jeni", a series of short stand-up pieces that ran during the trailers on over 10,000 movie screens in 1998, and were seen by over 48 million people.

Jeni's website biography claimed that he has appeared more on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno than any other stand-up comedian, dating back to when the Tonight Show was hosted by Johnny Carson.

In 2004, Jeni was named number 57 on Comedy Central's list of the 100 greatest standups of all time. Jeni was a graduate of Hunter College, where he majored in political science.

Our condolences go out to Richard's friends and family. Leave a message of condolence wishes on Richard's MySpace Page.

YouTube has some of Jeni's work see below.

No feelings at all for someone who offs themselves. Rest in Piss. Sorry. But that is how I feel. It is the most selfish thing you can do.

They say he was ill. Maybe he had some horrible cancer or something he couldn't deal with.

I didn't know him by name, but I looked him up on YouTube and the face is now familiar.

Definitely selfish if the guy had kids. Don't feel quite as strong about the suicide thing as you do about it though.

Good looks on the report.

I remember him and after Platypus Man, his routine was usually the same. Damn, seeing his name reminds me of Comedy Central in the early '90s when they repeated the same shows.

peace

Damn... BGOL gets the news a minute after the Associated Press! Thanks for the info. Oh well... Guess we gotta take his damn name down off the upcoming shows list for NJ. First James Brown, now this dude. We promote 'em and before they show,...they die. Thanks again...

Damn, Jeni was a funny cat a true orginial.

If someone can find his "Cooking Show with the Average Guy" skit ... that's a classic.

Cancer is a damn awful painful way to die. If you've ever seen anybody die of cancer i wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. I can totally see doing that if your shit is inoperable. The fucking treatment is worse than the illness.

Oh damn didn't know him by name but I remember him in The Mask with Jim Carrey. As others have stated though I have no sympathy for anyone who kills themselves. That's a real selfish way to go out regardless if you have a illness. Not to mention there isn't a faster way to get your ass in hell than to kill yourself.

Another actor, Richard Farnsworth (played the Sheriff in "Misery"), was diagnosed with terminal cancer and killed himself with a shotgun instead of dying an agonizing death from it.

Happened back in 2000.:(

And that's the most uncompassionate statement I've heard lately. "Judge not, lest ye be judged". :smh:

We're all going to be judged, and I hate when people repeat that bullshit.

We're all going to be judged???? You obviously haven't a clue what Jesus meant, which was simply don't condemn the actions of others without knowing all the facts, or the same could happen to you. Rather than "hate" try opening your mind. :hmm:

Man, come on.

Suicide is real, lost one of my best friends to that shit and I still blame myself more.

If you sick, mentally or physically, you need help, mental illness can be terminal by itself.

And if dude was physically sick, hey, why not, you know our "great" country will arrest you is you use medical marijuana instead of their high priced pharmacy drugs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So be easy, just cause we strong and aint sick in our mind or body, dont mean we can pass easy judgement on others that are.

Lets hope we never have to make that choice of living or dying cause we sick in mind or body.

I saw a recent picture of him, he didn't look good. He did look like he was sick.

Richard Jeni had two of the funniest lines ever. He told the story of getting beat up in a redneck bar. He said the guy's ideal of foreplay was " psst, you up sis?". I've used that line a hundred times.

He said about religious wars, "they're basically fighting over whose imaginary friend is better."

Chris Rock joked about this in his Bravo 'Actors' Studdio' interview.

Something like "Jeni left a note saying how much he enjoyed "I Love My Wife" before he killed himself. His last words were "That was a great film!" or something to that degree.

That's kinda fucke up, Chris!
