I have NEVER EVER heard Timberlake Samberg or that lonely island crew say her name out loud..

I remember her. Her husband Jerry Barnes became the bassist for Nile Rogers and Chic band. Katreese and Jerry wrote lots of songs together.

Jerry was actually her Brother

Her brother is bad ass bassist, Jerry Barnes.

Yep.
And though it is "classic" humor,
It's sad that Barnes has been getting notoriety for that SNL skit instead of what became a "Low-Rider" standard during the late 80s.
But was produced here in NYC by Eumir Deodato.
Still one of the SICKEST BASS LINE EVER!!!
Hell.
I didn't even know Barnes was SNL's MD until Deodato told me at J&R a few years ago before they closed.
He was surprised that I knew he produced JUICY's stuff.

Juicy was an American musical duo consisting of siblings Jerry Barnes and Katreese Barnes. The group is best known for the songs "Sugar Free" and Beat Street feature song "Beat Street Strut".

Their debut single "Don't Cha Wanna" was released in 1982 by Arista Records.[1] In the same year they also released their first eponymous album, which made it into Billboard R&B chart the next year.

In 1984, their song "Beat Street Strut", released by the same label, appeared in the 1984 musical-drama movie Beat Street and its gold-certified soundtrack.[2] The song was moderately successful on Billboard Dance chart, peaking #46 in July 1984.[3]

Their second album It Takes Two was released in 1985. The album featured an answer record to "Juicy Fruit" called "Sugar Free". It peaked at #13 on the Billboard Black Singles chart and #45 on the UK pop chart, and was certified Gold.[4][5] Another moderately successful single from the album include "Nobody But You", reaching number 59 on the R&B chart.[6]

Their last album Spread The Love released in 1987 remained unsuccessful, which resulted in disbanding of Juicy. Katreese Barnes later became a producer, songwriter and the musical director for Saturday Night Live.[7] She won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics twice for composing music for SNL, first in 2007 for The Lonely Island's "Dick in a Box" and again in 2011 for writing a monologue for Justin Timberlake.[8][9] Katreese Barnes died on August 3, 2019 at the age of 56.[7]

Katreese Barnes, a former musical director of Saturday Night Live, has passed away. She was 56. Barnes's brother, Jerry Barnes, told the New York Times that his sister had lost a decades-long battle with breast cancer.

Barnes and her brother released three albums in the 1980s as the R&B duo Juicy. She was hired as pianist on SNL in 2001 before working her way to the role of musical director. During her tenure on the show Barnes won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics twice, first in 2007 for The Lonely Island's "Dick in a Box" and again in 2011 for the “I’m Not Gonna Sing Tonight” musical monologue delivered by Justin Timberlake.

SNL writers including John Mulaney and Seth Meyers have paid tribute to Barnes following news of her death. “Katreese was great,” Meyers tweeted. “Sketch writers, many with no rhythm and terrible voices, would come to her with song ideas and she would turn them into gold.”

Mulaney, meanwhile, wrote on Instagram that Barnes would "write beautiful and hilarious songs out of my tone deaf warbling of lyrics. She was patient and funny and a musical powerhouse."

Oh my gosh, this is such sad, sad news. I loved the music of Juicy, for so many years. I'm playing them right now.
They were the brother and sister you wanted to go hang with just from looking at the album sleeves and hearing those
great songs and eumir's tight production. I was so proud to see Katreese still doing big things in her career after the group.
their song; Sugar free, is a staple classic over here, you wanna hear a club full of people singing along with that whilst dropping
foot to that infectious groove, big smiles everywhere, young and old. That's Katreese Barnes legacy.
My heartfelt condolences to Jerry and the whole Barnes family. I salute you Katreese, and I thank you. Rest In Peace.

Damn thats her singing on Sugar Free? Wow.......I thought that shit was Mtume.......

It was supposed to be a "response" to Mtume's "JUICY".
Honestly, I hated that Mtume song for years. LOL
Because I felt heand Tawatha Agee were way more creative than that single.
Though the rest of that album wasn't bad.

But "SUGAR FREE"???
I could bump that shit FOREVER!!!
