Real talk with AlexW partII: How do you swim thread?

when i try to float, i always fucking sink

but ill grab those goggles on amazon tho

ill beat this

Thats because you are not relaxing, and letting go. If you learn to relax in the water, you will float you have to let your body go limp and let the water carry you. More that likely because of your fear of the water you are not able to relax.

when it comes to swimming, honestly im a bitch

i dont think im ready to do this yet bruh

as soon as i go under, im going to think im drowning
you're going to have to thug it out to get over your fear. if necessary go to a 3 foot pool and try to lay on the floor of the pool flat on your stomach. don't move and just let yourself float to the top. do that a few times to get the floating technique down. if you panic, just stand up. keep working on it.

first thing you need to know and realize the human body is naturally buoyant you will not sink.

LOL...dude your body will float on its own. you have to relax and wait more than 3 seconds before you PANIC.

man its so easy to you cats because you learned as kids

kids arent afraid of shit, but the adult mind is fucked

but i will try it

i have too

shit i almost drowned twice...the last time was 2 years ago on vacation!

but i'm too hardheaded, i still like being in that water

gotta learn to swim one day

ninja that's child abuse and she will HATE you for that. :hmm:

fuck around and she gone call child services on you.

As quietness is kept, lack of ability to swim is a serious issue in our community. A gross number of black folks don't know how to swim at all, and a large but slightly less number of black folks feel they can swim "well enough to save their own lives" but have never had any formal lessons. Finding yourself in either one of the above mentioned groups will get your ass caught in a serious situation. :smh::smh:

You NEED to KNOW HOW TO SWIM for yourself and those close to you (especially your kids). Take some formal lessons with an instructor (one on one if possible to yield the best results) at the YMCA or a place like that. It's imperative. Sorry if I sound a little preachy, but as a former lifeguard, this is a touchy subject for me.

man the salt water actually helps you float a lot due to its buyoancy

i was in the grand cayman last year and (if i was more comfortable with water) i couldve easily floated due to the salt water

i just panicked and shit

but i will learn tho

no fam what I meant is with the waves pushing and pulling you it makes it harder to focus on tryin to swin especially when u have the waves coming at you hitting you in the face and giving you that drowning sensation I think it's easier to learn to swim in a pool

kids arent afraid of shit

bullshit i paid for my nephew to take swimming lessons this summer and that little fucker cried every week.:angry::angry: but according to his mother he was swimming when they went on vacation i wont believe it until i see it.

you're getting carried away. swimming isn't a necessary skill to have.

I almost drowned and never learned.I tell dudes at work i cant swim and they are shocked like I said I can't ride a bike.My brother learned from a girlfriend a few years ago but I cant look vulnerable to a chick like that.

I can't swim either, but I got this FIIIINE ass broad who use to lifeguard who can't wait to teach me how to swim  Women love to help bruh :yes::yes:

I feel you

i want a son at this point in my life and if that lil niggah ever got caught up, i would like to have the ability to save him

this is my main reason for wanting to learn

there is a stereotype out there that black people have a natural fear or water and don't swim.

1 of my frat bros in the army... he said in basic they had to do some swimming shit, an the instructor (a white guy) said lets see who can swim. Then he said something like the blacks an latinos can sit over here :smh::lol: an my bro said he was like  until they had to do the swimming drill an only like 2 out of 30 minorities knew how to swim an it was the total opposite for whites  Shit crazy

but in all actuality I think it stems from lack of swimming pools in the majority of our communities, an yall talking about YMCA's but those shits where pretty much non-existent in Cincy... we had the boys an girls club but even then I don't even remember it having a pool :hmm:

As a grown man who is thinking about having children of my own, I need to learn how to fucking swim.

I have developed a phobia for swimming(almost drowned when i was 15) and I must conquer it.

Any hints, tips, dvds, swim techniques, and any other sort of advice would be helpful.

I looked up swim classes but that shit is nil in my area. They have shit for kids but I dont see anything for adults.

I have to learn though. Its something that I must do and its the only fear I have in life.

Im tired of vacationing and the crackas our gloating about the water activities they engaged in.

You fucking crackas, I want to swim with the damn dolphins too!!!!!

:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

hve you looked into your local YMCA? I ask because my son is taking swim classes right now (he 4 yrs old) and the classes are only $95 for a 7 week course meeting once a week for 1/2 hour each week. Since I'm there watching I also see the adult classes going on at the same time.

she loves me mane, still comes to my room at night, kids of a marine man they bleed green like me.

aw hell, i shoulda known.

aight, when she sneaks up on you with a garrote and chokes yo ass you gonna be real proud of her right before it all goes black.

you're getting carried away. swimming isn't a necessary skill to have.
Right...it ranks right up there w/ prison drugs etc...this fuckin nigga...
I said "a serious problem" not "the serious problem", or even "one of the most serious problems":smh::hmm: Keep fuckin' wit water like it ain't a real danger ... That's half the problem. Even when the resources are there, folks don't think water is that big of a deal. Fuck leisure, what about flooding and other water based natural disasters. These seem to be happening a lot more often these days ...

Blacks in general do have a fear of water but thats because so many live in city areas and don't have access to pools. For example look at American Blacks vs Caribbean Blacks. The only reason I know how to swim is because my parents are from the Virgin Islands and didn't pass on a fear of the water to me.

60 percent of black children can't swim
New study underlies efforts to prevent drowning, boost sports participation
The Associated Press
updated 4:37 p.m. ET, Thurs., May 1, 2008
NEW YORK - Nearly 60 percent of African-American children cannot swim, almost twice the figure for white children, according to a first-of-its-kind survey which USA Swimming hopes will strengthen its efforts to lower minority drowning rates and draw more blacks into the sport.

Stark statistics underlie the initiative by the national governing body for swimming. Black children drown at a rate almost three times the overall rate. And less than 2 percent of USA Swimming's nearly 252,000 members who swim competitively year-round are black.

USA Swimming is teaming with an array of partners — local governments, corporations, youth and ethnic organizations — to expand learn-to-swim programs across the United States, many of them targeted at inner-city minorities. One of the key participants is black freestyle star Cullen Jones, who hopes to boost his role-model status by winning a medal this summer at the Beijing Olympics.

USA Swimming's motives are twofold, executive director Chuck Wielgus said.

"It's just the right thing to do — making an effort so every kid can be water-safe," he said. "And quite frankly it's about performance. We're something of a niche sport and for us to remain relevant, considering the changing demographics of the population, it's important we get more kids involved at the mouth of the pipeline."

Study surveyed nearly 1,800 children
As part of the initiative, USA Swimming commissioned an ambitious study recently completed by five experts at the University of Memphis' Department of Health and Sports Sciences. They surveyed 1,772 children aged 6 to 16 in six cities — two-thirds of them black or Hispanic — to gauge what factors contributed most to the minority swimming gap.

The study found that 31 percent of the white respondents could not swim safely, compared to 58 percent of the blacks. The non-swimming rate for Hispanic children was almost as high — 56 percent — although more than twice as many Hispanics as blacks are now USA Swimming members.

The lead researcher, Professor Richard Irwin, said one key finding was the influence of parents' attitudes and abilities. If a parent could not swim, as was far more likely in minority families than white families, or if the parent felt swimming was dangerous, then the child was far less likely to learn how to swim.

Irwin said this means learn-to-swim programs in minority communities should reach out to parents.

Disparity has a long history
The minority swimming gap has deep roots in America's racial history. For decades during the 20th century, many pools were segregated, and relatively few were built to serve black communities.

John Cruzat, USA Swimming's diversity specialist, said these inequalities were compounded by a widespread misperception — fueled by flawed academic studies — that blacks' swimming ability was compromised by an innate deficit of buoyancy.

"There are people who still give credence to these stereotypes, even in the black and Hispanic community," said Cruzat, who wants to break the cycle that passes negative attitudes about swimming from one black generation to another.

"These long-held beliefs are still so potent," he said. "If you don't teach your children to swim, you're putting your grandchildren at risk."

Cruzat was pleased by one finding in the new study — that most black and Hispanic children do not disdain swimming as a "white sport." The study also found that swimming ability, regardless of race, increased in relation to parents' income and education.

Yo say American Blacks in general have a "fear" of water cuz it's not simply "blacks"...cuz as you pointed out folks from the caribbean take to water like nothing...me being from the islands...I'm actually the "odd one" for not knowing how to swim when I'm w/ friends/family...my pops is like the goddamn black Aquaman...you would swear he be talking to fish and shit as far out as he goes and as long as he stays underwater... :smh:

Ya I actually almost drowned in a public pool when I was like 5/6...based on what some of y'all saying I guess that shit was more traumatizing than I realized cuz I have NO interest/desire in learning to swim...

Black Men Can't Swim

Broadcast on BBC Radio 4
Friday 2 October 2009 11:00-11:30

Actor, comedian and non-swimmer Matt Blaize investigates why fewer black people swim in the UK than the population as a whole.

He asks if it is a question of "can't swim" or "won't swim". He examines physiological theories that black people have a higher bone density and are therefore less buoyant; training methods; the lack of role models; and asks if any social issues can offer an explanation.

The issue is that West Indians have easy access to the water. As a result there is no real fear of the water, so many of your peers can teach you how to swim or you see them swimming. In the US its a different story. There isn;t that peer support group when it comes to swimming. Living in Hollis, Queens my neighborhood is a mixture of Black Americans and West Indians. Most of my American friends can't swim while its the opposite for WIs. Granted there is an exception to every rule but that tends to be the case.

I understand all that...just stop saying "blacks" like every black person is afraid of water...
