Sentenced to die for the murder of a St. Martinville druggist in 1945, Francis was strapped in the chair. The current was applied. The doomed man squirmed and jumped. But when the current was shut off, he was unharmed. "It tickled a little," he said.

Ancient Egyptian GOLD RING OF SHESHONQ
26th Dynasty, 6th Century BC

This heavy gold ring of the priestly official, Sheshonq, is a stirrup shaped signet. This type of ring was developed from the rigid-bezel ring of the Middle Kingdom. The lozenge shaped bezel is incised with the name and titles of the owner, which included the office of Chief Steward. The bezel could be pressed into hot wax to seal documents and letters. Besides this functional aspect, the ring was no doubt worn as a mark of Sheshonq’s status and wealth. The name ‘Sheshonq’ is of Libyan origin, belonging to several kings of the Libyan Period, but became popular among Egyptians from that time onwards.

Legacy Survey Reveals Dark Secrets of the Universe

Astronomers from France and Canada have publicly released the final version of the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey (CFHTLS), a unique and powerful multi-color collection of data obtained over 6 years from the summit of Mauna Kea.

The imaging project probes an extremely large volume of the Universe, gathering tens of millions of galaxies, some as far as 9 billion light-years away, and provides a treasure trove for many years of astronomical research. This remarkable collection of data is a landmark achievement for CFHT and has inspired observatories around the world.

The large number of published results from these images include dark matter maps on the largest scale ever observed and the first high-quality measurements which showed that dark energy closely resembles the cosmological constant that Albert Einstein predicted, but later thought might have been his greatest mistake.

George D. Gregory, Jr. (born November 22, 1905 - died May 11, 1994) was an former American collegiate basketball player and the first black basketball player to be selected as an All American college basketball player, in 1931.

A scholarship player at Columbia University, Gregory scored 155 points in 17 games in his freshman season to rank fourth in the Ivy League. During his college career, he helped his team to two consecutive Eastern Intercollegiate Basketball League titles (as the Ivy League was then called) and two Eastern titles.

The 6'4" Gregory was the captain and star center of the 1930-31 Columbia team that went 21-2 and that some say rivaled the famed St. John's University "Wonder Five".

He was named to the 1931 Helms Foundation All-America team, becoming the first African-American voted to college All-America status in basketball. He was joined on the All-America squad by John Wooden, the future legendary UCLA coach. In his three-year career, Gregory, the second African-American to play at Columbia, scored 509 points in 62 games, for an 8.2 points per game average in that low scoring era of college basketball.

The “Plat Eye” or “Plate Eye” is a mythical being from Gullah folklore. This image, from a mid 19th century print, shows one popular image of the creature. Others portray the being as a large dog with fiery eyes. The Gullah are the descendants of slaves, largely from western Africa. These individuals were brought forcefully to the New World because of their skill in cultivating rice. Unlike the highly supervised slave economies of the upper South, these tidewater communities worked under the task system, being assigned a particular swampy area of rice-growing land to work under the hot South Carolina sun, and being allowed to rest once it was tended. This allowed a new culture to emerge, which still exists in the lowlands and barrier islands of the coast to this day. The version of the Plat Eye depicted in this image is something similar to a human being. Its eyes, however, are as large as dinner plates, completely covering the face. According to Gullah tradition, the Plat Eye lives among tree branches, seizing victims who are wandering through the tideland forests late at night. Those targeted by the Plat Eye are never seen again.

The Plat Eye is sometimes portrayed as a stalker, following its victims and doing nothing. Sometimes, it can drive someone to madness. In other mythologies, the Plat Eye is a simple killer.
