William Harvey Carney (February 29, 1840 – December 9, 1908) was an African American soldier during the American Civil War. Born as a slave, he was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1900 for his gallantry in saving the regimental colors (American flag) during the Battle of Fort Wagner in 1863. The action for which he received the Medal of Honor preceded any other African American Medal of Honor recipient; however, his medal was actually one of the very last to be awarded for Civil War service. African Americans received the Medal of Honor as early as April 1865

Africville was an African-Canadian village located in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Residents of Africville ran small businesses, farms, a church, school, and paid taxes but the city of Halifax did not provide services such as paved roads, running water, or sewers. By the 1950s, the city of Halifax built an open-pit dump near Africville and by the 1960s, Halifax council voted to remove Africville leaving many residents displaced. Some homeowners even found their homes bulldozed without permission.⁣

In 2010, the city of Halifax issued an apology for the destruction of Africville and a replica church museum was opened in 2012. These photographs were taken in Africville between 1962 and 1965 by Bob Brooks and are part of the Nova Scotia Archives.

The "rumor mill" had it that Diana Ross and Marvin Gaye couldn't get along during the recording of their duet album "Diana & Marvin." According to music engineer Russ Terrana, Marvin Gaye was getting sky high in the studio everyday with the best weed money could buy. But Diana Ross, who was pregnant at the time with Tracee Ellis Ross, couldn't stand the weed smoke (or smell) and believed that inhaling too much marijuana smoke would harm her unborn baby. So Diana Ross asked Marvin Gaye to stop smoking weed inside of the studio, but Marvin refused (he was sick and tired of Diana always getting her way around Motown).

Diana then went to Berry Gordy and asked him to put a stop to Marvin's bad smoking habits inside of the studio. Berry Gordy allegedly had a one-on-one talk with Marvin about his smoking, but apparently that talk didn't go too well, since Marvin kept smoking without a care in the world. Marvin then went to Berry Gordy with a couple of complaints himself -- mainly complaints about the flat notes that Diana Ross was hitting during their recording sessions (he never had this problem with Tammi Terrell or Kim Weston).

According to the rumors, Diana and Marvin had to finish recording the album separately just to avoid contact -- or any further confrontations -- with each other. Despite the back and forth quarreling and fighting, the album went platinum and became a huge success for Motown Records. Marvin later admitted that he was being a jerk to Diana and could've been more sensitive towards her feelings (and needs) as a pregnant woman. | c. 1973.

Shit, I would have told Berry this duo couldn't succesfully work together. Marvin was a pure asshole.

Bruce Davidson, usa, 1961. segregated waiting room at
greyhound bus station along freedom riders route.
The Soldier pictured here is a Spec 6 (Specialist E6). The Army discontinued promoting Specialists above the rank of E4 in 85, the year that I came in. From that year forward, everyone got Hard Stripes or Chevrons for Sergeant and Staff Sergeant.

If I recall correctly, the Specialist insignia was worn mainly by Soldiers who were not in Combat Arms MOSs, so this guy could've been a Mechanic, a Medic, an Admin Clerk, or even a Cook walking around with a rifle and 10 rounds.

Almost all E-4's in Armor were specialists. I don' think I ever remember seeing an specialist 5 or corporal in armor. There were a few in mortars but mostly specialists.
