Oakland Raiders ownership are heading to Las Vegas Friday to meet with executives from the Las Vegas Sands Corporation about the prospect of developing a new stadium in Las Vegas.

The stadium would be built on 42 acres of land near Tropicana Avenue and Koval Lane that is currently owned by UNLV. UNLV President Len Jessup and Las Vegas Sands executives confirmed the meeting to 8 News NOW.

If the stadium is built, it could serve as home to the Raiders, pending National Football League approval. The Raiders are one of two NFL franchises that could relocate after the 2016-2017 season. The San Diego Chargers are also considering a move.

The NFL recently approved the Rams relocation from St. Louis to Los Angeles for the 2016-2017 season.

8 News NOW will have more information as it becomes available.

Is it really that fucking hard to get a new stadium in the Bay?????? It's California get a billion dollar OUTDOOR stadium and host the Super Bowl every 4 years..

It will never happen by the strip.. Unlv wanted an on campus stadium .. Sam Boyd Stadium is about 8 miles from the campus

By the M resort would be the most likely location . MGM just built a 10,000 seat arena on the strip and parking is already limited. But in all honesty I don't see a team coming to Las Vegas the economy is too small..

LAS VEGAS (KSNV News3LV) — Sheldon Adelson, the billionaire owner of the Las Vegas Sands casino company, wants to help build a professional-grade stadium at the UNLV campus and is meeting with the owner of the Oakland Raiders.

UNLV recently purchased 42 acres off Tropicana Ave and Koval Ln, close to the Las Vegas Strip. Sands spokesman Ron Reese said Thursday that the company envisions a public-private partnership to build a $1 billion domed stadium that could be shared by UNLV as well as a professional team, the NCAA, boxing, and potentially expand college football bowl games.

Reese says the proposed stadium would have 65,000 seats and would be built "with or without" any major sports franchise. A stadium that size would be a first in Southern Nevada, as well as larger than the current Raider stadium in Oakland.

Sands believes the 42-acre parcel is large enough to fit a stadium and on-site parking.

In terms of funding, Reese mentioned says Sands may ask the legislature for portions of the hotel-room tax currently supporting the Las Vegas Convention Authorityalthough specifics weren't immediately available. And although the company wouldn't necessarily fund any of the projects, it would bring in private investors.

Sands plans to have a formal proposal by March.

Adelson scheduled a Friday meeting with Raiders owner Mark Davis, although Reese didn't elaborate on their itinerary, he says Davis' trip is at the Sands' invitation.

Nevada political journalist Jon Ralston first reported the development.

Nevada Board of Regents Vice Chair Michael Wixom says he was notified less than 24 hours before becoming public.

"The stadium is really something of a Rubix cube."

Wixom is also a member of the 2013 legislature-created UNLV Stadium Authority Board and welcomes the interest. The school has long discussed building a stadium closer to campus. The current one is seven miles away.

But he also discussed a myriad of complexities to make it a reality including financing, event planning, how a stadium will realistically fit into the overall campus, as well as governmental authorities.

"Money. Money is always the biggest challenge," says Wixom. "There have been situations in which professional teams have shared a facility with a college team. We would have to look at that very closely. Our primary responsibility on the Board of Regents is furthering the mission of UNLV."

The NFL has said no in the past to Las Vegas because of the gambling issue.

The next Nevada Board of Regents' meeting is currently scheduled for March.

UNLV President Len Jessup released this statement about the project:

Suppose you and your girl live in a mansion. One day your girl say "either you build me a better house or I'm moving to San Antonio" would you build the house or help her pack?

Same thing applies here. Don't let the rich do what you won't let a bitch do.

i can see that happening.
no other sports team to compete with in that city.
wouldnt be surprised at all....
