How wasn't it? Kane was a confused dude that was given a chance to get out of the game. He had people giving him options and trying to get him to leave. (Sharif with college, Ronnie with him going to ATL.) He also dodged bullets. (getting shot, cousin dying..getting locked up.) The dude that FINALLY put it to him in a manner that he could understand was Sharif's dad. ("What are you gonna do if you stay?") But by the time he decided to leave then it was too late.

Those people were positive influences that were put in his path to keep him from getting killed and he didn't listen. I have fam that went through the same thing. Now they are locked up or dead because the people that were put in their path to guide them tried to talk to them but they didn't listen.

Like I said it's my opinion, but I believe that GOD put them there to give them direction. But you believe what you want. I don't knock you for that.

If that is true, does that mean that the road we choose to walk was meant to happen through God?

No.. because from your very words you said we have a choice which I agree given that been said GOD'S path for man has always been the better choice than man can make for him or herself so if one errors away from the path and fails it's not GOD'S fault given we have choices some are behind bars because of bad choices or died before there time ultimately we all have choices (choose wisely)

The reason why preachers can't explain this is because they're taught two things which I think hinder their understanding of the Bible.

1) Satan is God's adversary. Check Job the first chapter, Satan had to check with God before he did anything.
2) That God is "good" by human standards. Humans constantly anthropomorphize things. Dogs. Cars. Body parts. Etc. We have difficulty understanding things that happen outside of our own personal experience, and want to blame everyone and everything. ( When bad things happen, people want to blame God. They're taught that "God is good, all the time". )

With that in mind, that verse could imply that God put all different types of spirits on people. Within the context of the story of Samuel, God was already done with him being king. He was working on getting him off the throne and bringing David in. The next couple of chapters show Samuel getting increasingly worse.
