With the economic and food crisis like it is and, stated by the powers that be, it will get worse before it gets better (in all seriousness) how do you honestly keep everything in perspective?

On this board there is always a post about the crisis in the world and everything and everyone says you better make a survival kit and stack your money and dig a bomb shelter in you backyard where you can keep your family safe. I know you have to prepare for the worst and always be cautious no matter what. But, historically speaking, what is the difference between anyone doing this and anyone preparing for the rapture, or anyone preparing for an invasion of aliens, or anyone preparing for a nuclear strike from Russia? (The examples are out there but you understand)

Secondly, how do you buy gold? Do you buy bullions, coins and/or bars?

Just asking because I am curious. Look forward to the answers

I like to remain rational when it comes to preparations.

- Do you work for somebody or yourself?
a) If you lose your job?
b) Do you have an alternate money flow?
c) Do you have skills you can use to make quick cash or trade or barter with?
- Do you have dependents?
- Do you have goods that can be sold for quick cash?

If there was no headlines like this

I probably would say that some preparations are sometimes overkill but this is reality for now, thousands losing their jobs daily and we have no idea what could be next.

I keep it simple, better be ready instead of sorry.

As far as buying gold, I would buy the simplest form of pure gold available in your immediate your area - check out the yellow pages and go check stores to find out what they are buying off people the most and get some for yourself.

Also buy stuff easy to stash, hoarding gold and getting it robbed is silly. Do not tell your friends and outside family about it.

Good advice. I work for myself. I am about to sell my businesses, business is HORRIBLE!!!! But I definitely can make money with a trade. But, as of right now I have a lucrative job lined up.

The first question was more of a philosophical question. There is no right or wrong answer, it was just something to ponder and I wanted to see what others were thinking.

But, the gold thing, I'm definitely starting to get more of it. I actually started my survival kit (cash [dollars, travelers checks, euros and metals], water, food, gun(s) and ammunition, clothes, etc) after 9/11 and was even more energized after Katrina. Now I'm like Man I need to get back at it hard again. You never know what might happen
