Full disclosure: I had to put my musical career on my resume to explain the gaps. It turned out that one of the interviewers was a fan of some of the projects I worked on. That being said, I got this job on my merits!
You kind of do depending on the realm you're working in.
You wouldn't show up to financial institutions or a law office or business office etc like that
But ALSO nowadays you can know that because you should do research on the company you're working for. Look at the linkedin look at the pictures they post about activities and who works for the company
go to the Glassdoor reviews and see
If you can't find anything then err on the side of caution
the gaps can be a killer
they can be used as a positive and a negative
when it was a black person they were QUICK to think drugs, jail, warrants etc
but a white person more often then not
NOT all the TIME but often
they got the benefit of the doubt
oh they were taking a BREAK, 9 months aint that long etc etc..
We had a Black male applicant with almost a year break and they tried to just throw the resume out
I said DAMN let him at LEAST come in
he comes in and he was a little evasive.
and I just told him, you should just tell me...
and he explains his wife had major complications after the baby and he had to take care of her and he was embarrassed that he was staying home taking care of his family and later working nights off the books
I was like why didn't you just TELL me that? He said how was he supposed to write that up?
We didn't hire him but I helped him get ANOTHER position somewhere else better for him too
but that aint the KICKER.
WHITE GUY with a BIGGER GAP
just writes SABBATICAL on his CV.
NO QUESTIONS asked.
