One of my goals this year is to learn guitar. I play keys/piano by ear. I want to learn some r&b/funk/soul/blues & jazz. I checked prices for lessons in my area & I'm not about to pay $75 for 2 hours a month.

Anyone know of good software, sites or books that will get me started? Is guitar easy?

Thanks fam.

I am tryin to learn acoustic guitar myself. I got some friends of mine that play and are gonna help me but there are videos that help teach you the chords and basic stuff. If you look on the guitar center website or musciansfriend.com, they have books and videos for cheap that show the basics. Or you could check out youtube. I have seen videos of people showing how to play songs and how to play basic chords and scales.

Thanks, guess I'm gonna have to pick this guitar up & learn this stuff on my own. If my 57 yr old uncle can teach himself..a monkey can learn it.

Theres tons of resources on the net for learning guitar, just type guitar into www.mininova.com and check the apps and videos. Theres lots of lessons on youtube, none of that shit was around when I started playing guitar back in the day. Theres good guitar websites too, as long as you have a printer to print out guitar tabs, which is tablature, the convention for writing down guitar music, and a binder to put them in you dont need to spend a penny.

The best, and only way IMO, to learn to play is print out a sheet of guitar chords like this

http://www.thecipher.com/Basic_Guitar_Chords.pdf

Then pick a couple of songs you like with relatively simple guitar, print them out from here

http://www.ultimate-guitar.com

Practice the chord fingerings and try jamming along with the track. You'll be playing in no time, then practice practice practice.

Try this with the songs "Patience" by Guns and Roses and "Polly" by Nirvana. They're 2 good simple jams that'll get you moving fluidly through the most basic and important chords, everything else is building from there. It'll be no time before you can move up to stuff like reggae, soul, rnb etc which tend to have trickier timing so you need to have the basics down pat.

Oh yeah, and buy a tuner and keep your shit in tune.

Guitars, even expensive ones, need to be retuned almost every time you pick them up as they're sensitive and quickly go outta tune. Thats one of the biggest faults of beginners, is trying to learn on outta tune guitars cause it takes a while to get your ear up and know if what you're playing is off. Theres guitar tuner software you can get for free on the net too that you can use with a mic but I tend to find them more fiddly and inaccurate than a little $20 joint you can cop at the store.

The Frank Zappa Guitar Book is a book of musical transcriptions of some of Frank Zappa's guitar solos. The Frank Zappa Guitar Book was distributed by The Hal Leonard Publishing Corporation in 1982, and is out of print as of now. The book was transcribed by Steve Vai. The selections in this book are not to be taken lightly, the rhythmic quality of these transcriptions are nothing short of amazing, and must have been a huge undertaking for Stevie Vai. Polyrhythms are packed chin high, and tonality makes a slight curve in this masterpiece. Vai has talked about some of his experiences while transcribing this book: "Frank gave me these two cassettes filled with wild guitar playing, some of which was released on the Shut Up 'N Play Yer Guitar records, and some of which has never been released. And the more I transcribed, the more he piled the stuff on. At the time, I was getting paid $10 a page, and it would take me three days to do one page!"

Songs include:

five-five-FIVE
Hog Heaven
Shut UP 'n Play Yer Guitar
While You Were Out
Treacherous Cretins
Heavy Duty Judy
Soup 'n Old Clothes
Variations on The Carlos Santana Secret Chord Progression
Gee, I Like Your Pants
The Deathless Horsie
Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar Some More
Pink Napkins
Stucco Homes
Theme from the 3rd movement of Sinister Footwear
Watermelon in Easter Hay
Packard Goose
Outside Now
He Used To Cut The Grass
Sheik Yerbouti Tango
Rat Tomago
Mo' Mama (unreleased song)

Yeah, I am in the same boat as the OP. Been practicing for about 4 months now. But, anyway here is some of the resources that I found helpful

Instruction:

I found this program that plays out the tabs so you can get your timing down:
Install file - http://www.sendspace.com/file/37zykw
Serial - http://www.sendspace.com/file/wqp62l

Here is a site where you can download the Tabs for the above program:

My wife brought me this for Christmas it was pretty helpful worth checking out:

first of all you need to learn how to read music. Yes it is good to learn to play by ear but you should always know how to read the music. Go to you local sam ash or any other music store and check the board in the lobbies there are always people giving lessons at resonable prices. If you are series about learning the money and time spent will be worth it.

but if you cant afford lessons ,dont let that stop you
stick with it & have fun

Guitarists don't have to read notes sheet music as much as tabs. Its important to understand how to read tabs because most guitar parts that are written are tabs and chord charts. Learn your chords and tabs and you should be okay.
First off, learn to play before you get to all of that. You can be a great guitarist without being able to read music but not without knowing how to relax your fingers and where to put them on the fretboard.

Damn I didn't even know this post was continued. haven't been on bgol in a minute so I'd like to give a big thanks to all esp Grey Goose for all that value info. I've been playing for a few weeks & have learned 3 chords (A, E & D). Right now I'm just working with those 3 chords trying to get faster switching between the 3. I bought The Readers Digest Complete Guitar Course which starts you off with those 3 chords but the book is thick & great so far.

If you want to play Jazz guitar, then you will have to know lots of music theory, and you will need to know the fret board like the back of your hand. Jazz guitarists are virtuosos. It's not like rock music, where you can get by with three chords. To that end: Chord Wizard Gold & Absolute Fretboard Trainer.

http://www.chordwizard.com/gold.asp

http://www.soft3k.com/Absolute-Fretboard-Trainer-p223.htm

You can find both of these programs for free if you look around.

Also, someone said that notes are all over the place on the guitar. This isn't true. They are logically laid out, and any jazz cat knows exactly which notes he's playing at all times. True, notes do repeat. However, an E2, E3 and E4 (using scientific pitch notation) are three difference notes. Also, since the guitar is a transposing instrument, everything is played an octave lower than it is written.

If jazz guitar is your goal, invest in learning music theory. Niggas will always say that you don't have to know this and you don't have to know that. But, as Chris Rock astutely pointed out, "Niggas love not knowing shit."

whenever you log onto bgol, go to the search option. then hit ADVANCED SEARCH. then do a "search by username" and put your name in the box. it will show all the posts you've recently posted in. or just subscribe to the important threads so you get an email everytime someone responds.

as for the overall thread, i agree with the fact that you need music theory at least basic reading/understand how to read notes. that's for any musician really. it will help your improv skills too

Alfred's Teach yourself to play guitar-Deluxe editionis a great cd to learn from...sites like fretplay.com have tabs of almost every artist and type of music (lots of pop-ups). Have fun and never quit!!:)

When I started out, I would go to stores that had sheet music. The song books usually had the guitar chord fingerings right there on the music. Yes, those fingerings are at the top of the neck but if you're playing acoustic, you will probably be playing there for a while anyway. Pick some songs you like or one of those books with 500 songs and work on songs that you recognize. This will get your finger strength up and give you a chance to figure out if you are serious before spending a fortune on lessons. Also, get a good guitar. Get one with good action, that will keep you interested longer and allow you to play longer before getting tired.

preach

youtube is a good resource too

I've been playing for about 7 years so far.

I realized that im more facsinated by sounds that could be produced by guitar , more so than actual chords/grooves. SO for the last 4 years, its all about creating ambient tones .

So my favorite guitarist doesnt even play much shit like jazz , they just make loud drones and ambience . Which are simple in theory , but diffucult to execute without pronouced creativity .

To hear it live , liberates emotions . Its a pure religous experience . It may sound weird to some, but without droney/ambient music - i would be a wreck .

Growing - Into the prism

No matter what system you are using for sight reading on the guitar, you still have to re-arrange the positions of those notes to get the speed you want, if you need it... And as far as "Niggas love not knowing shit", you don't teach calculus in kindergarten.

What the hell are you talking about? There are plenty of lightning fast guitarists who play in the standard tuning.

As to teaching calculus to young children, that's just more ignorant nigga shit. I have seen a quite a few famous musicians who can't read music. (Someone has to figure out what they mean and then transcribe it for them so other musicians can play it) However, I've never heard even one of them who didn't say that they wished that they had learned to read music from day-one.

There is simply no good reason not to learn how to read music, and every reason to do so.
