Question for film makers

I just finished my first student film and I'm trying to promote it to various film festivals. Getting it screened will get me an award from the school (Expression College). Winning a cash prize will gain me legitimacy after graduation. Can anyone recommend some good festivals to submit it to?

A few details, it's a 7 1/2 minute romantic comedy filmed in Oakland, California.

http://www.reelworld.ca/ - If you're lucky you can even get a grant. You don't even have to be Canadian.

cool,,, what is it about, how long is it, & how much was your budget?

Movie is called "Five Steps Away" it's about a man who tries to find love by following a self help book. It's 7 1/2 minutes long. The budget was about $200. The filming and editing equipment was provided by the school. I'm putting up another $150-$200 to promote it.

^^Sounds like a good idea with a unique twist.

I have no real suggestions for you other than stay original and don't give up your dream.

you just submit your film to festivals...i've never made a film, but i've worked on quite a few...

to my knowledge it doesn't cost any money to submit your films...

Like Flow Fusion, I was going to suggest withoutabox. You can go to that site and open an account. You can check the site out whenever you want to see what's out there, in addition to that they'll send you e-mails about upcoming festivals from around the world. The site also allows you to apply for/enter your film(s) in those festivals. From that point you'll just need to mail copies of your work to the folks who need to receive it. Withoutabox will also keep you updated on the progress of your submission...

Doesn't your school teach this info or do they just give you a camera and say Good Luck?

pretty much dog.
film school doesnt teach u what u really need to know about the movie industry.

it shows u how to be filmmaker,
but not a film producer.

thats why alot of cats who go to film school say "fuck directing". the money's in producing.

^^^ a friend of mine was going to USC film school, cost her 40K a semester...

at the end of the day, she said she was basically just paying to be right down the street from the big hollywood studios and connections.

Expression is primarily a digital media college not a film school. They get you to make a short film so that you can see how your major (motion graphics, gaming, animation, or in my case sound arts) applies to the movie industry.

That being said, if there's one thing I've learned about creative media it's that a paycheck carries a lot more weight than a good grade or critical acclaim. When you have people who are putting their houses, cars, and savings on the line to get a project completed they need to know that their crew has a track record of putting out commercially viable work. A cash prize at a festival is a great step towards proving my worth.
