Question About Diamonds

Just saw Blood Diamond yesterday.

It seemed very obvious that the Kimberly Process detailed at the end of the movie would not end the problem and what I've read on Wikipedia confirms that.

Its amazing how certain materials are determined to be so valuable.

The value of diamonds is artificially inflated, creating the conditions for warfare. As long as there are conflict diamonds, it doesn't really matter too much where on particular diamond came from because they still all get mixed together.

How much do you women care about this? How many diamonds do you own? Will this affect your future decision making at all (or has it already)?

i couldn't care less about diamonds. i like other stones tho. turquoise, lapis, amethyst, sugilite, aquamarine, tourmaline, etc.

I have a diamond ring someone bought for me.

I rarely wear it but I do love it.

I don't know if I buy into the idea that you can separate blood diamonds from other diamonds.

How do you really certify that?

The moissanite looks just like a diamond. The only problem is it's just as expensive.

Seeing as though they can grow diamonds in a lab that pass all the litmus tests why are diamonds so fucking popular still??? I thought exclusivity was the reason for it seeing as though they were once thought to be rare, but since everyone knows Debeers and other jewelers keep em locked up to avoid flooding the market, as well as scientists now being able to make them artificially why does the price still remain high??? Never bought or owned a diamond, never saw what them so special to warrant the pricetag, but I know one day I may have to break down and buy one cause Im sure the women I am to marry will want one, but I just dont see the appeal.

As a guy who has never worn a piece of jewelry in life I haven't thought about this much and don't know the differences re: diamond types, but the impression I got from the movie was as you said, that the value is artificially inflated by keeping them locked away. People are dying over pennies because they seem like dollars to people who have never seen this invisible Fort Knox.

I wonder how they came to be considered so valuable. (Might do some looking into it when I have the time.) I doubt I'd ever buy one even for a marriage scenario knowing the needless suffering attached to the trade.

They went from silver to gold to platinum
After the millennium, they’ll probably be wearing iridium

I inform my family and friends/lovers etc that I do not like diamonds to avoid them purchasing things that I feel obligated to keep.

Like Bi-girl mentioned there are so many other beautiful stones. I've even seen some blown glass beads that were stunning. No reason to support diamonds if you don't like them and the practices of the industry.

I feel sorry for the future wifey because she isn't getting a diamond. Of course, the woman I marry will already have an understanding as to why I feel this way.

I said the same thing back before Blood Diamond came out in another thread. If people can smuggle HUMANS across boarders, how hard would it be to smuggle some sones the size of marbles out of the same country and then sell them??? So no, I don't buy the authenticity of the "Kimberly process".

dont let the lights in the jewelery store fool you, moissanite tends to look greenish or grey in sunlight. but you're right about the price
