PSA Testing and Prostate Cancer

I'm not there yet, but how often should you get tested? Every year after 40 years old? There's this dude named @Amajorfucup , at his age he's probably been fingered at least 30 times in his lifetime. You should ask him for more info.

I haven't had the blood test - I saw a special on the news a few years back saying the following about PSA blood test - just b/c ur score is high doesn't mean u have prostate cancer - just b/c ur number is low doesn't mean u don't have prostate cancer - in a nutshell they were saying urologist were misdiagnosing a lot of people and recommending unnecessary treatment - recent research shoes the mineral boron may be helpful in warding off prostate cancer. I've heard several people onhere also talk abt saw palmetto for prostate health.

as ninjas age, they should diminish red meat consumption and increase the ingestion of lycopene based foods.

since i (54 y.0.) have been psa testing, my levels range: .44 - 1.29 (4.00 is warning zone).

Top 10 foods high in lycopene

The foods you consume daily are among the biggest factors affecting the quality of your health. It makes good sense to choose foods that are nutrient dense and offer some benefit to the body rather than just eating empty calories.

One of the best choices you can make is to regularly consume foods containing high amounts of lycopene which research has proven has advantages for maintaining good health.

Lycopene is an antioxidant that's a member of the carotenoid family of nutrients. It's responsible for the red colour found in many fruits and vegetables. Adding foods rich in lycopene to your diet gives you a daily supply of antioxidant power that's a great way to deal with free radicals in the body, those free-flowing molecules that can damage cells.

The antioxidant power of lycopene prevents free radicals attaching to cell walls in the body, helping your immune system do its job of protecting you. Here are our 10 top foods high in lycopene that you may want to add to your weekly grocery shopping list:

  1. Guavas, the delicious tropical fruit that tastes like a blend of strawberry and banana, rank highest in lycopene content per cup consumed. This low-fat fruit can be used in salad dressings, fruit salads and smoothies.
  2. Watermelon, another refreshing fruit choice, is an excellent source of lycopene, in fact its red colour comes from the lycopene it contains. Enjoy it slightly chilled by the slice.
  3. Tomatoes are a popular source of dietary lycopene, with cooked tomatoes and tomato paste having a higher content than the raw product. It's a good choice for pasta sauces or adding slices to sandwiches.
  4. Papayas are another tropical fruit rich in antioxidants and make a great edible serving dish with prawns or chicken salads.
  5. Enjoy a pink grapefruit half at breakfast and you're starting your day with a healthy dose of lycopene.
  6. Sweet red peppers cooked in a little olive oil are another food choice with antioxidant power, yet low in calories.
  7. Steamed asparagus has lycopene power and makes a nice side dish for poultry or meat.
  8. Choose red cabbage for preparing coleslaw since this variety will boost your system with its antioxidant power.
  9. Mangoes are another lycopene-rich fruit choice perfect for adding to salads.
  10. Carrots are another vegetable that provide a source of lycopene, so make sure you include them in your diet.

What Are the Benefits of Lutein & Lycopene?

Lutein and lycopene are antioxidant carotenoid compounds that help give red, orange and yellow fruits and vegetables, such as tomatoes and grapefruit, their color. Some research suggests that lutein and lycopene can benefit your health in a number ways, but dietary supplements may not be as effective as food sources of these compounds. To maintain maximal health, eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables each day, making sure to include vegetables rich in lutein and lycopene.

Cancer Prevention
Many observational studies carried out by scientists and doctors have shown a correlation between diets rich in tomato products and reduced cancer risks. Because tomatoes are rich in the antioxidant lycopene, many experts believe that lycopene may have a role in preventing cancer. The American Cancer Society details the evidence for lycopene in cancer prevention. While consumption of tomatoes may reduce your risk of getting prostate, lung or stomach cancer, more research needs to be done to determine if lycopene supplements can have a similar effect. Like lycopene, dietary sources of lutein may also help to prevent colon cancer, according to the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

Macular Degeneration Prevention
Macular degeneration is an age-related eye disease that causes loss of vision in older individuals. The University of Maryland Medical Center explains that diets rich vegetables that contain lutein can help prevent macular degeneration. There is also some evidence that lutein in combination with zeaxanthin, another vegetable-pigment-based antioxidant, can reduce risk of macular degeneration. Dietary lycopene may also help to prevent macular degeneration.

Skin Protection
Lutein, lycopene and other carotenoids can protect the skin from damage caused by sunlight or UV rays. The Bastyr Center for Natural Health summarizes a study of the use carotenoid supplements in promoting skin health. According to this research, people who took lutein and lycopene supplements had reduced skin damage and irritation upon exposure to UV light. The Lutein Information Bureau explains that lutein may also help to protect your skin from pollutants and toxins in the environment.

Intake Recommendations and Sources
The Institute of Medicine has not established a recommended daily intake for lutein and lycopene, but consuming 10 milligrams of each nutrient daily benefits your health, notes the Linus Pauling Institute. Cooked tomatoes, raw tomatoes, watermelon, red grapefruit and papaya offer beneficial lycopene, while leafy green veggies, like spinach and kale, offer ample amounts of lutein.
