PS3 First-Year Sales On Par With Xbox 360's

Much has been made about the PS3's slow start, but in all fairness, too many people are comparing it to the PS2's dominance. The last generation was a blowout in favor of Sony's system, but nobody really believed that would happen again, what with Microsoft's debut firmly behind them and Nintendo going a new - and profitable - direction with the Wii. Furthermore, just how far behind is the PS3? Really? Well, if you simply look at the hardware sales charts, it's not.

This chart aligns the PS3 and Xbox 360 launches; it's current, so it includes the first 10 months of the PS3 and Wii's existence, and the first 23 months for the Xbox 360. We forget the 360 faced plenty of issues during its first 10 months, and that was without any competition. In the face of both the 360 and Wii, the PS3 has managed to sell just about the same number of units up to this point. And now that we have the price cut and the introduction of the "entry level" 40GB PS3, it seems very possible the PS3 could end up selling more units than the 360 in its first year. The holiday season is almost upon us, and of course, that will tell the final tale of the tape.

As you can see by the chart, the Wii is outstripping the competition, but analysts expect a very close three-way race throughout most of this generation. But we just wanted to point out that, despite all the negative PS3 press (which has admittedly died down over the past few months), the overall sales numbers are right on par with its primary competition when comparing the first year.

Yep. Very skewed. XBOX 360 had no price drops and no new SKU's introduced and still sold. PS3 had 2 SKU's, dropped one, did a price re-arrangment on the other and then are bringing out 2 new SKU's all in the first year.

So yeah, they are doing just fine.

Not true. Before July the sales lined up when you compare first year sales. Just line up the launch days and you'll see the curves pretty much match each other.

True but they should know that the 360 had very weak first year sales. It didn't do all that great it was just a moderate success. Remember they were supposedly going through a supply shortage and you didn't really see them on shelves in abundance until June in some instances. So it really didn't move a bunch of units during the first 10 months.

It moved a lot during last holiday season and for a few months into this year then tapered off again.

So while neither of them are doing great numbers it's far less harmful to the 360 because 1) it has a 6 million unit lead and 2) it's still out selling the PS3 world wide majority of the time. The PS3 isn't closing the gap it's actually widening some months.

This story is skewed. The 360 came out when people were still not really ready for the "next gen" stuff. Also a lot of people were waiting for the PS3 before deciding if they were going to buy a 360 or not, hence the 360 slow start. If anything Sony dropped the ball, because a ton of people were waiting on the PS3. But the high price lack of games and Sony not backing up all the bullshit exagerated ability the system is suppose to dish out. Whatever happened to that Sony statment that said " Next Gen doesn't start until we say so." And before the Sony dick-riders come in, I have the blu-ray player, I mean PS3 also.

This is a valid point to an extent. But you do realize that the 360 will always be cheaper then the PS3 don't you? The 360 is not the original Xbox they can get very aggressive with the price this time around. If you look at all these price adjustments/drops and bundles you should be able to tell its going to be very hard for Sony to catch the Wii and the 360.

The jist of the story is that world wide sales during Year one so far match up. If the rate of sales is good for Xbox, why the fuck is it bad for Sony? If it were the other way around, the xbox users would say see see look we are selling as much.

I'm not here saying all of a sudden the PS3 is going to out number the 360. But I'm not going to sit here and hear dumb PS3 hate. The numbers match up pretty well when you line up starting points. Just accept it.

As far as PS2 vs 360 goes. The PS2 economy still overwhelms the 360, Wii and PS3 combined. Its a last generation device thats still a very viable platform today.

You guys are way to emotionally biased about these platforms. Please put on sensible business caps and understand there is room for 3 viable and very healthy platforms.

When it's dirt cheap and has enough games on it thats not on 360 to warrant my purchase, but thats at least a good year off.

Thats exactly what Sony knows and is counting on. Remember

PS1 sold about 112 million Worldwide

PS2 120 million World Wide and still selling.

They have an incredible retention rate when you consider return customers. They could give two shits about what other consoles you buy. The are concerned on retention and expansion. They also have a portable gaming unit that could have a really good halo effect as the iPod didfor the Apple Macintosh. Especially when you see how the PS3 and PSP can interact with each other in ways nobody thought before.

I have a PS3 but it doesn't blind me. I see great capabilities in Xbox live that I hope are going to be implimented in the very near future, as you can see in the image below.

But I consistently see deep rooted hate from 360 people. Any bit of good news for the PS3 that has no negativity towards the 360 and you guys still spit venom.

I know people who have 360s from launch. They all told me that the 360 had a dry spell too in the beginning. They've all bought PS3s except for one. They like it. Whats wrong with that.

It's not quite the same though. The Playstation brand has never faced this fierce type of competition before. I really don't see it just one day exploding out of nowhere to eclipse the Wii or the 360 for that matter.

Every single time they drop the price or make a bundle MS will do the same exact thing. 6 million units is a ton to make up when you can't even out sale the system you're trying to catch monthly.

The 360 will always be cheaper then the PS3 and will always be easier to create content for. Its a monstrous uphill battle for Sony to get over. And truthfully I try to be objective with these little debates, I really don't have a side. I do however have a preference as I have always had with each and every console generation but I've also always owned 2 or more systems. Don't always take it as hate when someone has a counter point to yours.

See this is the flaw in you guys argument. It doesn't have to move Halo 3 or Gears of War numbers. They have a 6 million console lead on Sony. All they have to do is maintain that lead by dropping consistently good software and keep cost reducing the machine so they can always have the price advantage on Sony.
