A Broward County principal was arrested Saturday after police said he beat his teenage daughter with an extension cord.
Hallandale High School Principal Darren Jones, 42, surrendered at the main county jail in Fort Lauderdale.
He was charged with aggravated child abuse, a second-degree felony.
Jones is the second Broward principal to be arrested in the last two days.
On Friday, Coral Park Elementary Principal Amanda Miles was charged with drug possession. Police said they found marijuana in the bedroom of her Coral Springs home.
According to a police report, Jones used a power cord to strike his 16-year-old daughter on her arms, legs, back and hands on Jan. 9.
The girl sustained ``distinctive'' bruising and scaring, the report said.
A subsequent Child Protective Services investigation found the action to constitute ``extreme child abuse.''
Jones admitted to striking his daughter, said his attorney, Eric Schwartzreich.
He said the father intended to discipline the troubled girl.
``They're concerned parents trying to get their teenage daughter back on track,'' Schwartzreich said. ``This is a family matter, a parenting matter, not a criminal matter.''
Schwartzreich said Jones has cooperated with the investigation and turned the cord over to police.
Broward County schools officials could not be reached for comment late Saturday.
Jones became principal at Hallandale High less than two years ago. A longtime teacher and school administrator, he has won multiple education awards over the course of his career.
Looks like from news cast that she had been a problem and this was more of a last resort. What does BGOL think?
