Prince is in hot water after working with a contestant from The Voice. Prince is being sued by Sony for “poaching The Voice contestant,” according to TMZ.

Singer Judith Hill appeared on The Voice in 2013, where she got the attention of the same woman who discovered Lady Gaga. Jolene Cherry, a Sony producer, recognized the Voice contestant’s talent and signed her to an exclusive deal with Sony.

But then Prince “shamelessly stole” Hill away and produced an album with the former Voice contestant.

According to Rickey, when Sony and Cherry caught wind that Hill was recording with Prince, they “warned her not to continue.” Neither the Voice alum nor “Purple Rain” artist took heed.

Instead they recorded a whole album, consisting of 11 songs. They then released that album on Monday as a free Internet download.

The whole situation has Cherry and Sony understandably upset. Larry Stein, lawyer for Sony and Cherry, is going after Prince “not only for regular damages but punitive damages for underhandedness.”

The former Voice contestant, though, has filed a complaint against Cherry. According to Courthouse News, Voice alum, Hill, said that Cherry “planted a story that accused her of writing a love song to North Korea’s communist dictator,” which caused quite some trouble for Hill.

Hill also says that her contract with Cherry was null and void.

The Voice alum said that she was told by Cherry “you can take all your tracks and go pending whatever outcome is the final one here,” referring to some troubles Cherry was having with Sony.

Hill’s one time producer then said that she was “sick of the music business and all of its trash” before disappearing and leaving the Voice alum to fend for herself.

But now, it is clear that Cherry is back and ready to fight for “control over Hill’s contract” even if that means taking the musical icon, Prince, to court.

Before causing all of this musical drama, the former Voice contestant performed as a back up singer for the Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Josh Groban and even Elton John. Hill then appeared on the fourth season of The Voice before being eliminated in the eighth round.

Since leaving The Voice, Hill has toured with both Josh Groban and John Legend before releasing Back in Time with Prince.

if they are similar to American Idol...they probably have some wording in the contract they make contestants sign...that states you can only put out an album through them..for 2 years...following your appearance on the show...

this ensures...they exploit these singers for every last penny they can...before the public forgets their name....

and it also ensures that the contestant can't jus appear on the show...and then use that leverage to sign a better record deal..with a competing label...

She couldn't get an album out with Sony, Prince in 3 weeks puts an album out for her, yep worth it, she gets to put an album out with lyrics she wanted to say, Sony not going to let her say what she said on the album, so she gets a album produced by Prince, now Sony has to step up the production game on her album, Sony could release her but they aren't specially after hearing the Prince produced album, some heat rocks on the album, not a Bria Valentine project some quality production going
The album is good, has some great horns on the album.
Prince will use the case for his platform against record labels. Prince always ahead of the game, pretty sure his line is blowing up by female artist to produce an album

she was in "20 ft from Stardom", and I just didn't "hear" what all the fuss was about with her voice. imo she was getting destroyed by some of the older OG singers

All the benefits of marketing without spending a dime.
Seems too good to be true, seems like a move 50 would do.
Either way if she goes back to Sony and completes a proper album with them she'll have at least 45 minutes of material to perform = instant headliner, no opening act shit. Sounds like a win to me.

man Lisa Fischer and Merry Clayton were way stronger than her, well imo of course.

Actually, I don't think Sony has a case. There was no monetary loss on Sony's hand as they didn't give up a dollar. Were there any stipulations in the contract which says that an artist can't give away their music for free? Did Sony actually make an effort to promote the artist even though she was signed to an exclusive contract. Judith Hill could probably countersue asking that Sony provide a proper account of the money that they have spent in order to produce and promote her product. That would force Sony to put up or shut up and have put up monies to produce an album that would be superior to what Prince did.. and obviously that is something that they had no intention of doing.... and they don't own the masters so she doesn't have to pay them for royalties earned for something she gave away for free..

Not sure if Prince is playing chess but if he was this was a damn good move on his part because it basically exposes Sony.

A free album which is a mix tape is only helping market her product if the album takes off and builds a buzz so it only benefits Sony. So what are they suing for?

i thought that was her. i gotta give her props for keeping on keeping on in her attempt to finally step into the spotlight instead of being a career background singer.

Thanks for confirming she was in "20 ft from Stardom", what a great movie. Those old school
broads could sing their ass off. What I got from here part in the movie is that she is
still chasing the dream and it looks like she is a hell of a lot closer now.

I feel in love with Merry Clayton, she was killing that line in the Rolling Stones song gimme shelter.
She was recently in a car wreck I hope she is doing well.

Yeah, I loved that documentary. And Ms Clayton blew the doors off of song with the stones. She is truly blessed with a powerful and beautiful voice. They don't make em like that anymore.

her voice breaks and squeals on the highest pitch part but given whats she's singing about (rape and murder) it sounds so emotional and appropriate and the fact that that was a conscious decision :wepraise::wepraise::wepraise::wepraise: thats what you call putting your foot in it!:yes::yes::yes:
