I think it's just for driving a higher status of cab that pays better. It's one of those old fashioned things from pre-GPS days.
^ that reminds me - I need to watch some more of the Fake Taxi xxx scenes on the tubesites. They’re always good for a laugh and have some decent porn chicks.
