Between 1882 (when reliable statistics were first collected) and 1968 (when the classic forms of lynching had disappeared), 4,743 persons died of lynching, 3,446 of them black men and women. Mississippi (539 black victims, 42 white) led this grim parade of death, followed by Georgia (492, 39), Texas (352, 141), Louisiana (335, 56), and Alabama (299, 48). From 1882 to 1901, the annual number nationally usually exceeded 100; 1892 had a record 230 deaths (161 black, 69 white). Although lynchings declined somewhat in the twentieth century, there were still 97 in 1908 (89 black, 8 white), 83 in the racially troubled postwar year of 1919 (76, 7, plus some 25 race riots), 30 in 1926 (23, 7), and 28 in 1933 (24, 4).

Statistics do not tell the entire story, however
. These were recorded lynchings; others were never reported beyond the community involved. Furthermore, mobs used especially sadistic tactics when blacks were the prime targets. By the 1890s lynchers increasingly employed burning, torture, and dismemberment to prolong suffering and excite a "festive atmosphere" among the killers and onlookers. White families brought small children to watch, newspapers sometimes carried advance notices, railroad agents sold excursion tickets to announced lynching sites, and mobs cut off black victims' fingers, toes, ears, or genitalia as souvenirs. Nor was it necessarily the handiwork of a local rabble; not infrequently, the mob was encouraged or led by people prominent in the area's political and business circles. Lynching had become a ritual of interracial social control and recreation rather than simply a punishment for crime.

9/11 - 3000 people died of terrorist attacks; 9/11 - NEVER FORGET

4,743 persons died of lynching; LYNCHING - FORGET ABOUT IT........

INDIANAPOLIS(January 15, 2008) -- Police are looking for two unidentified men seen running from a home where two women and two children were fatally shot Monday night, and Sheriff Frank Anderson on Tuesday said Indianapolis police won't rest until they arrest whoever killed the four.

"I can only say there's a special place in hell for you, and we're going to see that you get there," Anderson said, referring to the gunman or gunmen.

This is one of my adopted hereos I picked out for myself as a role model when I was a kid. This is my superman. I love him to my heart. He saved the goodness of true human spirit in the face of an truly evil spirit on a world stage for America.

I remember sitting in 4th grade and seeing a blur. Because of him, I always believed I was somebody no matter what. I was the stuff real heroes was made of. The Blackness. Keep on.

Hilter said Blond hair and blue-eyes were the supermen of the world. This man proved they were not. There was a great spirit in America. He was defeated on a world stage before the war. It was already won.

Ryugyong.jpg

Ryugyong Hotel-failure on a national level.
Started in 1989 and stopped in 1992 when North Korea ran out of funds to continue the build, and has just sat there for 16 years. Known as "The World's Worst Building", the North Korean government has had the Ryugyong Hotel removed from maps, photos, and pamphlets of North Korea. Even locals are not permitted to talk about it by government orders. Which is funny because it is the largest structure in North Korea. Construction has finally began again on April 2008.

On July 22, 1975, photograph Stanley J. Forman working for the Boston Herald American newspaper when a police scanner picked up an emergency: “Fire on Marlborough Street!”
Climbed on a the fire truck, Forman shot the picture of a young woman, Diana Bryant, and a very young girl, Tiare Jones when they fell helplessly. Diana Bryant was pronounced dead at the scene. The young girl lived. Despite a heroic effort, the fireman who tried to grab them had been just seconds away from saving the lives of both.

Photo coverage from the tragic event garnered Stanley Forman a Pulitzer Prize. But more important, his work paved the way for Boston and other states to mandate tougher fire safety codes.

Picture of Tacoma Narrow Bridge collapsing after 5 months from it’s traffic opening. The wind-induced collapse occurred on November 7, 1940 at 11:00 AM (Pacific time), due partially to a physical phenomenon known as mechanical resonance.
Shortly after construction finished at the end of June (opened to traffic on July 1, 1940), it was discovered that the bridge would sway and buckle dangerously in relatively mild windy conditions for the area. This resonance was transverse, meaning the bridge buckled along its length, with the roadbed alternately raised and depressed in certain locations — one half of the central span would rise while the other lowered. Drivers would see cars approaching from the other direction disappear into valleys which were dynamically appearing and disappearing. From this behavior, a local humorist coined the nickname “Galloping Gertie”. However, the mass of the bridge was considered sufficient to keep it structurally sound.
The failure of the bridge occurred when a never-before-seen twisting mode occurred, from winds at a mild 40 MPH.

The bravest little girl in the world on that day, Ruby Bridges. Think about this when you see young people taking educational opportunities for granted nowadays.

There is a back story to this that only New Orleanians that are atleast 50 years old will know. During those days many of New Orleans' neighborhoods were integrated, 9th ward, 8th ward, 7th ward were are mixture of black and white. Kids of all colors had paper routes together, played in the streets together but did not go to school together. If you were a white kid and you live in the 7th ward circa 1950s you went to St. Aloysius(now Brother Martin) if you were a black kid you went to either St. Augustine or McDonogh #35 so forth and so on. When the schools were fully integrated in 1961 it was peaceful in comparison to the fall of 1960 but it started a slow but steady white flight which had major effects on the city as a whole some of which are still being felt today.
