Federal investigators are warning consumers that products purchased from five major online retailers could be counterfeit and the fakes could be harmful to your health.

Investigators bought 47 products from Walmart, Amazon, eBay, Sears Marketplace and Newegg. Of those products, 20 were fakes, the Government Accountability Office said in a new report.

Products include everything from makeup to phone charges and athletic shoes.

The products were all sold by third-party sellers with customer ratings above 90 percent and all were shipped from US addresses.

The 47 items purchased were advertised as new, name-brand items.

According to the report obtained by CBS News, of 13 Urban Decay cosmetics purchased across the five sites, all were found to be counterfeit, as were six of nine Yeti Mugs. Out of 10 UL-certified phone chargers that are commonly used for iPhones, one was a fake, but all 15 pairs of Nike Air Jordan shoes were the real thing.

But more troubling is that federal authorities warn that counterfeit products can be dangerous to consumers.

The report says an examination of 400 counterfeit iPhone adapters found that some "posed a risk of lethal electrocution.” Counterfeit travel mugs may have higher concentrations of lead than recommended and counterfeit cosmetics contain such substances as cyanide, arsenic, mercury, lead, urine, and rat droppings.

Spokespeople for Amazon, eBay, Walmart, Newegg and Sears Marketplace told CBS News said they have stringent procedures and that counterfeit products and sellers found to be peddling fake items are removed from their marketplaces.

The two main federal agencies in charge of stopping counterfeit products from entering the country are U.S. Customs and Border Protection and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

CBS News says in 2016, CPB conducted 31,000 seizures of counterfeit items that would be worth $1.38 billion if the products were authentic.

Data from CPB showed that most of the seized products came from China and Hong Kong.

I know for a fact that Amazon sells fake Flower Bomb perfume.

I bought my girl some about 3 years ago and a substandard knockoff arrived.

amazon.com/Flowerbomb-Viktor-Rolf-Women-Parfum/dp/B000P20U7G/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1519748604&sr=8-1&keywords=flower%2Bbomb&th=1

Amazon ended up refunding my money and told me to keep the fake perfume since it cost so much to ship liquids.

The got damn seller of the perfume supposed to be the manufacture of the perfume.

Amazon allows this bullshit.

Dont fuck with marketplace sellers.

If you are buying online, always check for "sold by Amazon", "sold by Bestbuy" or whatever.

Also, filter the searches so that you are getting items from that particular store and not the 3rd party sellers.

Not always the case.

Amazon is allowing people to sell fake merchandise under some of the names of legit retailers.

I feel u my dude. I'm a fragrance/cologne/perfume connoisseur...I gots to have it, but the womens shit is more expensive than the mens shit.

thanks for the info....

kinda already had an inkling from readin' some of the reviews below the product...

customers talkin' about they bought something...and it broke in less than a week...or even arrived broken....

this article further confirms it....

this is one of the drawbacks of shoppin' online....in person you can feel the product...and better ascertain its quality....

some items..it's probably better to go to a reputable brick-and-mortar store...in person...and buy over the counter....
