"I'm so frustrated. Just because I'm black/African American doesn't mean I'm Christian. I was raised in a home where we attended church, but during college I decided to officially call myself an atheist. Yet other black people are constantly assuming that I have a 'church home' or saying they will pray for me or telling me to pray about something -- it's like they have never met someone my color who isn't 'saved' before. It's such an assumption, and white people aren't treated the same way. How can I tell the world to stop making this assumption about me without offending and encourage people to think before they put their belief systems on others?" --Annoyed Atheist

I'm not surprised to hear that you're having this experience. After all, according to a Pew poll, black Americans are more likely than members of any other racial or ethnic group in the country to report a formal religious affiliation. And even among those who didn't select a particular religion in that survey, three out of four identified as "religious unaffiliated" (meaning they didn't choose a denomination but said religion was either somewhat or very important in their lives). That's compared with slightly more than one-third of the unaffiliated population overall.

So, the people who are making assumptions about your religious beliefs aren't being particularly sensitive, but they are making a pretty safe bet.

"Plus, if you break it down by gender, black women are the single most religious demographic in the country," journalist Jamila Bey, host of The Sex Politics and Religion Hour: SPAR With Jamila, told me. Bey is an actual poster child for black atheists, having been featured in an African Americans for Humanism campaign showcasing religious skepticism in the black community. ("Doubts about religion? You're one of many" was the advertisement featuring her photo split with one of Frederick Douglass.)

Then we have images of African Americans on the big and small screens reflecting and reinforcing high rates of religiosity among black people. There's Tyler Perry's cinematic assembly line of films with black stars and heavy-handed Christian messaging, plus reality series like The Sisterhood (starring the first ladies of Atlanta-based churches) and The Sheards (the story of a gospel superstar family in Detroit). BET is Black Entertainment Television, not Black Religion Television, but programs like Morning Inspiration remind anyone flipping through channels that worship is part and parcel of the mainstream black experience in America.

To be fair, it's not just your skin color that's getting you the unsolicited blessings, prayers and labels, though. Some of what you're experiencing is explained by the simple fact that we live in a predominantly Christian country. "Ask your Jewish friends. They'll tell you it's 'Merry Christmas, Jesus loves you,' all the time," says Bey. She explains that it's a simple issue of the dominant culture imposing assumptions on everyone else, and it leads to some of her personal pet peeves, comments like, "You're such a good person/You're such a good parent. Clearly, you're a Christian."

But you're probably on to something to feel that your race is playing a role in what people decide that you believe. "Intraculturally, we look at each other and say, 'I don't see you wearing a headscarf, so clearly you're a Christian' and 'You look like me, so we clearly share a religion,' " says Bey.

Your frustration is a reminder that being stereotyped doesn't feel any better just because the offender thinks the assumption he or she is making about you is a positive one (even the most positive one possible, as Christianity likely is to many Americans). And it doesn't make it any better when the offender is the same race, either.

Like the article says its more a cultural thing than a black thing. However I’m pretty sure the typical middle/upper middle class Black atheist will get more flack from their families and black friends than their white counter parts. The more educated white folks are the more likely they are to be free thinking. You can't make that assumption with Black Folks. I had that discussion by accident with two well educated lawyers in my family. Jebus runs deep and these folks just aint unplugging from the matrix for shit. Personally I don't care if someone says Merry Xmas or have a blessed day. I might respond with Have a Happy solstice or happy holidays. Life is too short to get bogged down over bullshit like this.

arent we baptists?

I remember when I told my parents I didnt believe in that "garbage". they told me they werent too surprised because I was going to hell anyway.

Whites defined all this shit centuries ago. It's scary how few people question exactly why they are xtians. :smh: Whites could have been worshiping a three-headed pig named Oinky and folks would be running around talking bout :D "You need Oinky in your life!"

:yes::yes::yes::yes:

you ain't neva lied

atheists annoy me just as much as fundamentalists of any religion btw (in regards to the article)

It's easier to just follow what you think is the norm, rather than to open your mind, learn, and accept something that isn't what you were brought up on. My grandmother is uber religious, my mother broke away from that somehow and didn't force any religion on me(although I went to catholic school, but that was more for educational purposes). Once you learn about all religions, they all have the same virtues...with little differences here and there.

Most my family don't believe in this silly bullshit. If youve noticed the most educated people like doctors , lawyers etc, dont believe in this bullshit silly brainwashing. It's desperate people who struggle who need justification for living who believe in this shit. Which is why the Black church was so popular during slavery and civil rights, we needed something to hang hope onto.

the worst kind of humanoid are the ones who are thankful for slavery so that they could know jesus today

I dont subscribe to theology or none that jesus nonsense, christian folks that i know tell me they will pray for me all the time.

i just smile and let it be,its not that serious.

everyone is atheist in respect to Mithra,Dionysus,Buddha,Muslim etc...

the black church is popular now cause pastor need those helicopter blades.

and women need something nice to wear and accessories to show off while they style on other broads... usually IN CHURCH.

:lol::lol::lol:

my mom is methodist.
my dad is catholic... i was raised in both churches.

they knew from childhood, right after i said i was gonna kill santa claus, that i had no business in nobody's church.

nowadays, they don't attend anymore either... too much boy fucking by priests for my dad. for my mom, there's been too many building funds and offerings being raised and the church STILL has never had a makeover. nothing.

Yeah my grandma is from New Orleans and is a hardcore catholic, I let it be, everything crazy she hears about it's, "aww lawd sacred heart of Jesus" I just smile, i don't care no more.

I cant stand those loud abrasive ones who are more enlightened. if theres one thing ive come to learn: let people believe whatever they want to believe. it isnt like we can actually influence their behavior. if youre susceptible to it, you cant ever shake it.

Educated people are less likely to be religious. Intelligence also plays a part. But the sad truth is, people suspend logic and critical thought when religion is the topic. Indoctrination starts at too young of an age.

They will believe a virgin gave birth thousands of years ago because that's what they were raised to believe. But if a modern woman claims such an incident, the woman is batshit. A bible character hears god saying do some fucked up shit, it's all good. If it is a modern day person, fry the summmabitch.... Selective logic.

I think most freethinkers have heard :smh: "that's just the devil talking" shit when we first realized religion was horseshit. Humans are basically bullied into the religion of their time and culture. For most of humanity, people who thought religion was bullshit learned to STFU.

It's a definitely a safe call statistically. Many of the black people that I know and meet know, whether in church or not, about Fred Hammond, Shirley Caesar, James Cleveland and Kirk Franklin. However, whites that don't go to church or call themselves born again, can't tell you who Stephen Curtis Chapman or name any other contemporary Christian artist.

The line is very blurred. Even black celebrities call themselves Christian and often thank God or Jesus at award ceremonies.

I have to be fully honest and look at why I didn't question until I understood how thorough the indoctrination really, really is.

Man, don't you know it, as long as "he" is doing it, black folks feel it's "the way".:smh:

I have found that whites and black of the same intelligence quotient, find a great grouping of blacks still believing about that man they created in 15 century named "jesus".

I really and truly never understood how you could be book intelligent, especially in science, and not ever question the biblical text.

When it's all you know though......I guess that happens.

Yeah, to me, that sh!t is CRAZY!

If it's inside the bible, it's quite alright. You say you can do or see some sh!t like you did in the bible, now, call you a straight heretic and a devil worshiper.

the audio is hilarious!

Im not a believer and I don't judge folks that do... I politely decline when I get asked if I want to go to church. I knew the shit was a sham when I saw well respected church family snatchin' 20 dollar bills out of the tithe basket when I was young.

Yes it's crazy to assume all black people have common sense to know that the bible isn't a white man's book and that black people had bibles in their hand before 1619 all the way back to ethopia.

Can't wait to Ali Muhammad gets smashed by the Hebrews.

He even admitted polight and seti took L's and he even admitted the black conscious community was disappointed in those 2 loses and want revenge.

Ya'll niggas 3-0

It's tough to not be Christian in black America ...especially in the south. I said I practice Nichiren Buddhism and black people looked at me like I was a unicorn. Whatever works for you is best, different operating systems for different hardware. I was raised Catholic, traveled some and studied new philosophies and found one that suited me best.

^^^ C/S

So you following the chink religion? :smh:

It isn't a religion in the traditional sense as it doesn't worship a god(s), more about awakening yourself and using the divinity inside yourself.... Learning to master yourself.

The Buddha was not a "chink" but your obtuse comments are enjoyable
