Aight I'm brand new fresh out the box with the photoshop thanks to BlackLS430 and this page.

I've never used it before but I'm on a mission to make a PS3 theme this weekend just to try it out. I can't for the life of me figure out how to cut, edit and save individual pics from a bigger pic? :dunno:

For example. Here's two sheets of icons I want to cut up. I just want to make each of the icons into a little picture of their own, resize it to 128x128 and call it a day. Somebody point me in the right direction please.

1. turn on photoshop app.
2. open image in photoshop.
3. use the the pen tool to draw your path around the rounded box.
4. make sure you save that path in the path palette.
5. once that is done, in the path palette their is a thumbnail command/click into the thumbnail to activate your selection.
6. goto the layers palette make sure the background is unlocked.
7. click ok.
8. then click add layer mask button.
9. now u should have the little icon masked out.

to move the path use the black cursor.

to activate to see the path just click into thumbnail in the path palette.

Preciation. One thing though? When I start using the pen tool it stretches a line in the direction I'm drawing and the opposite direction. So should I just draw from the middle?

when you are using the pen tool, it should go in the direction when you mouse click it.

(to make straight lines with a pen tool hold down shift.)

you might be talking about the arm that come out of the anchor points. those arms help you round out your line to say for example the rounded corners of those icon boxes that you want to select.

don't be afraid to play around with them.

Oh ok I got you. Preciate it again man. If I get it going I'll post up my theme.

i am glad this is helping you out.

once you have made that path with the pen.

save the path so that you can reuse it again.

without having to redo the path again since all the shapes are the same.

in the path palette click on the upper right corner of that specific palette there is an option called save path click on name it whatever you save.

(to move path use the black cursor below the "T" tool (which is the type tool.)

when you slide the path onto the next icon that you want to mask use the black cursor to select the path shift and drag over each individual icon and follow the above instruction.

Is this a PS3 theme for the PS3 or something else? I only ask because because you may want to make sure that the size of the original icon is correct. Like if it was a PS3 theme for an iPhone or iPod touch, you would want your icons around 65-75x65-75. Or a PS3 theme for a PC, you may want multiple sized icons of the same icon for different applications. Also, if it's for a mobile device, you would want to "save for web" instead or the "save as" so that your png files are smaller.

This is the proper way to do it, but I'm just lazy. I would use the shape tool and choose the rounded edge rectangle to make a square over the icon I wanted and use that shape to make a selection by control-clicking on the shape in the palette box. It's not proper but it works.

so true there are more ways than one to can get things done in photoshop.

wassup Peacer37, which Photoshop are u using cause I cannot find the rounded rectangle in CS4?

I don't know any of the proper techniques, so I've found some stuff just messing around with it. I have CS4 and if you right click on the custom shape tool (default) it should give you options for other shapes.

Also, you can change the amount of an edge by changing the pixel radius on the toolbar above:
