In an effort "to clarify what government agencies and their public administrators do and why," A-Z entries on American bureaucracy focus on events, topics, and personalities in public administration. Information differs depending on the type of entry. Biographical entries provide both birth and, if relevant, death dates (years only) and a short profile that emphasizes the subject's impact on public administration. Biographical subjects include some presidents; social reformers and activists (Jane Addams, Mary Parker Follett); public administration authors (Frank Goodnow, Dwight Waldo); and behavioral scientists (Abraham Maslow, Max Weber).
The encyclopedia has an index as well as some standard federal documents such as "How a Bill Becomes a Law," the U.S. Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and a helpful chapter, "Looking for Government Information."
This volume is suitable for readers at the high-school level and up. Its value for the general public is in helping the average person get a better understanding of government and the public policy process. For public administrators the volume should be used as a desk reference, kept near the phone book, annual report, personnel manual, and budget documents.
