Getting Started With English Language Learners
Publisher: Association for Supervision & Curriculum Deve (January 30, 2007)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 1416605193

Book Description
"It’s been six months, and I STILL can’t get my English language learners to participate in class!"
"How can I help my newcomers feel more comfortable around other students?"
"Am I doing enough to help my English language learners succeed?"

Have you had these thoughts? Take heart, you are not alone. As schools and districts swell with growing numbers of English language learners, and as administrators and teachers wrestle with federal guidelines for educating these students, many educators are faced with these same challenges and much more. To meet these challenges, it is imperative for educators to learn about and use the theories and teaching strategies that will help English language learners succeed in the classroom.

In Getting Started with English Language Learners: How Educators Can Meet the Challenge, Judie Haynes provides a practical resource to help educators who are new to the field of English as a Second Language understand the needs of English language learners. From learning how students acquire a second language to differentiating instruction to exploring practical strategies for teaching newcomers, this book will help educators learn how to create effective learning environments for English language learners.

Real-life scenarios from actual classrooms are presented throughout the book. The book also includes a brief overview of different types of ESL programs used in the United States and a helpful glossary of common ESL terminology.

New teachers, veteran educators working with English language learners for the first time, and administrators can all use this book to increase their knowledge, improve their practice, and, most importantly, effectively educate and inspire English language learners.

Published by: Manhattan GMAT Prep
File type: pdf

Sentence Correction (1 of the 8 books in Manhattan GMAT's Preparation Guide series) provides a highly organized and structured approach to the variety of questions in this verbal content area. Students are presented with every major grammatical principle and minor grammatical point tested on the GMAT.

The book offers a unique balance between two competing emphases: test-taking strategies and in-depth content understanding. Practice problem sets build specific foundational skills in each topic and include the most advanced content that many other prep books ignore. As the average GMAT score required to gain admission to top b-schools continues to rise, this guide provides test takers with the depth and volume of advanced material essential for succeeding on the GMAT's computer adaptive format. Book also includes online access to 6 full-length Simulated Practice GMAT Exams at Manhattan GMAT's website.

Each chapter builds comprehensive content understanding in the given topic area by providing rules, strategies and in-depth examples of how the GMAT tests a given topic and how you can respond accurately and quickly. Each chapter (except Odds & Ends) is followed by 15 challenging practice problems, progressively increasing in difficulty and designed to increase your ability from novice to expert in the given topic. Answers with explanations follow each problem set.

After mastering all the Sentence Correction topics and completing Manhattan GMAT's comprehensive problem sets, you can test your knowledge on Sentence Correction problems that have appeared on past GMAT exams. These problems are contained in The Official Guides For GMAT Review (sold separately), published by GMAC, the organization that administers the GMAT. Manhattan GMAT has categorized all the Sentence Correction problems in The Official Guides by grammatical topic area. These categorized problems have been organized into a problem list and problem matrix that appear in the back of the Sentence Correction Strategy Guide.

John M. Anderson “The Grammar of Names"

This book is the first systematic account of the syntax and semantics of names. Drawing on work in onomastics, philosophy, and linguistics, John Anderson examines the distribution and subcategorization of names within a framework of syntactic categories, and considers how the morphosyntactic behaviour of names connects to their semantic roles. He argues that names occur in two basic circumstances: one involving vocatives and their use in naming predications, where they are not definite; the other their use as arguments of predicators, where they are definite. This division is discussed in relation to English, French, Greek, and Seri, and a range of other languages. Professor Anderson reveals that the semantic status of names, including prototypicality, is crucial to understanding their morphosyntax and role in derivational relationships. He shows that semantically coherent subsets of names, such as those referring to people and places, are characterized by morphosyntactic properties which may vary from language to language.

The Grammar of Words: An Introduction to Linguistic Morphology (Oxford Textbooks in Linguistics)

Geert Booij's popular textbook examines how words are formed, compounded, and inflected in different languages. It shows how, when, and why to use methods of morphological analysis and explains how morphology relates to syntax, phonology, and semantics. The author considers the universal characteristics of morphology and how these are reflected in the workings of mind. The revised edition has been revised and updated throughout; it has a full glossary and a new chapter on the field's most notorious problem: the status of the word. 'The Grammar of Words by Geert Booij covers a broad range of topics from structural questions to psycholinguistic issues and problems of language change. This introduction to morphology is thorough and accessible and, like other works by this renowned author, especially strong at showing the significance of empirical facts for theoretical reasoning.' Ingo Plag, University of Siegen 'A book that is fully comprehensive in its coverage as well as exemplary in its clarity, written by one of the major scholars of contemporary lexical theory.' Sergio Scalise, University of Bologna

Analyzing Grammar: An Introduction (Cambridge Textbooks in Linguistics)

Analyzing Grammar is a clear introductory textbook on grammatical analysis, designed for students beginning to study the discipline. Emphasis is placed on comparing the different grammatical systems of the world's languages, and students are encouraged to practice the analyses through a diverse range of problem sets and exercises. Topics covered include word order, constituency, case, agreement, tense, gender, pronoun systems, inflection, derivation, argument structure and grammatical relations, and a useful glossary provides a clear explanation of each term. Accessibly written and comprehensive, Analyzing Grammar is set to become a key text for all courses in grammatical analysis.

Exploring Grammar In Context - Upper-Intermediate And Advanced

Manufacturing is the backbone of any industrialized nation. Recent worldwide advances in manufacturing technologies have brought about a metamorphism in the industry. Fast-changing technologies on the product front have created a need for an equally fast response from manufacturing industries. The selection decisions are complex as decision making is more challenging today. Decision makers in the manufacturing sector frequently face the problem of assessing a wide range of options and selecting one based on a set of conflicting criteria.

Exploring Grammar in Context draws on real spoken and written English from the most up-to-date research in the Cambridge International Corpus. Clearly structured units focus on main grammar areas with key points summarised in 'Observations and 'Summary' panels. It also offers practical support and useful reference material. Key Features: * Real spoken and written English examples of grammar as it is used today. * A wide range of exercises enable students to check their understanding and progress. * The answer key offers detailed explanations, a glossary of grammar terms and supporting grammar reference notes.

Elementary Lessons In Historical English Grammar: Containing Accidence And Word-Formation

So many slighting remarks have been made of late on the use of teaching grammar as compared with teaching science, that it is plain the fact has been lost sight of that grammar is itself a science. The object we have, or should have, in teaching science, is not to fill a child's mind with a vast number of facts that may or may not prove useful to him hereafter, but to draw out and exercise his powers of observation, and to show him how to make use of what he observes... And here the teacher of grammar has a great advantage over the teacher of other sciences, in that the facts he has to call attention to lie ready at hand for every pupil to observe without the use of apparatus of any kind while the use of them also lies within the personal experience of every one.
