PHILADELPHIA - A grocery store clerk was shot dead by a masked man in North Philadelphia, but police don't believe robbery was the motive for her killing.
That was the first of two separate homicides Monday night that Philadelphia police are now investigating.
The first fatal shooting was on the 3300 block of North Mutter Street in North Philadelphia, inside the Caribe Mini Market.
Crime scene tape roped off the popular neighborhood mini mart where people say the victim, a very likeable young woman, worked.
Police say a man wearing a ski mask and gray sweatshirt walked inside the store just before 8 p.m. and fired four shots. The brazen gunman didn't seem to care that several witnesses were inside.
The store's 33-year-old clerk was shot at point-blank range. She was pronounced dead at Temple University Hospital.
"The perpetrator entered the store, fired several shots at point-blank range at this female. This male did not announce a robbery. Nothing was taken. So we believe the motive was just to shoot her and killer her," Chief Inspector Scott Small said.
Police are examining surveillance video from inside the store.
The woman was known to rail against dealers in her drug-infested, dangerous neighborhood, according to police. She knew it was dangerous and still fought back, they say. She had signs on her front door saying no weapons or hooded sweatshirts allowed in the store.
"She was a nice person. She was a sweet person. She didn't have no enemies, you know. It's devastating," one woman said of the clerk.
Just minutes after that woman was killed, deadly shots were fired in West Oak Lane on 21st Street. A man was shot in the chest and stomach. He died at the hospital.
A second man was hit in the thigh. No arrests have been made.
Following this latest murder, the city's homicide rate now stands at 27. The city is now on pace to record 428 murders this year.
FOX 29's Steve Keeley had more details Tuesday morning in this live report from outside police headquarters.
